Last month or so I crafted the first five decent 3D fractal images with Mandelbulber:

Both old version 1.21 and new version 2.02 of Mandelbulber have been used. Bit of postprocessing with the Gimp. Feel free to comment or criticize.

the rendering quality is amazing, and the post process feature are high quality as well, how is formula writing for mandelbulber getting on ?!
i have not yet tried mandelbulber out excessively, but if the plugin mechanism based on shader code or some other is ready we could all start
implementing a huge amount of formulas wink

bring it on dudes!

I've only hacked the source of Mandelbulber 1.21 and to be honest I only know a little about it. First goal was to get the correct formula for the 3D Burning Ship into Mandelbulber. Soon the goal was set back to "just add abs() operator somewhere in a formula", which was a lot easier and did work out.

Is there a good resource on 3D fractal formulea, about how they work and how to convert them into pieces of code (for Mandelbulber or in general)?

Search for the DE functions here in the forum, plenty of them were discussed, but ratherlong time ago, mandelbulb3d contains descriptions of the formulas in the i button ofthe formula selector

@ youhn. Very nice images.

I use adaptions of the formulas in the Mandelbulber User manual

Quote from Buddhi before he added the option of writing OpenCL custom formulas:

There are three types of formulas:
1) which uses analytic distance estimation: trig_DE, trig_optim (default)
2) IFS formulas and Mandelbox: menger_sponge, tglad, smoothMandelbox, kaleidoscopic, mandelboxVaryScale4D
3) rest of formulas, which uses "delta DE" algorithm for distance estimation

Third type of formula is the easiest for modification and doesn't need special knowledge about distance estimation, because it is done by external function.
So if you want to test your own formula, try to overwrite for instance hypercomplex formula:

So far I avoid using Delta DE as I cannot get a descent image with hybrids.

I have no programing knowledge,  but have just been slowly figuring it out with the aid of this forum.

@ Christian.   For the last year the majority of my images have been by writing my own modifications to formulas in Mandelbulber

Maybe soon I will post more about what I've learnt.
