Once, way back in the day, there was another fractal forum (I forget what it was called - anyone remember this thing?) That forum has long since deceased (it had a very short lifetime). On this forum we had a great game - fractal tag. Here's how it worked. We started with a parameter set (yeh, this was a UF game - it made things easy), and from there everyone was free to add a layer and re-post the parameter set. There are four rules: - You cannot, EVER edit another layer. You may add a layer only. You may not add a layer which completely masks previous layers, every layer must blend with previous layers, changing the image in new, and interesting ways.
- You may only ever add one layer. Not two. Not one and a half. The exception is masks. Your layer can have as many masks as you want, as those are strictly subtractive.
- You cannot post twice in a row. Once you post an edit, you are 'it' and cannot post again until someone posts another layer
- No animation. This is because we don't all use UF4, and animation just generally makes everything harder. Tag games could be run without this rule, however.
Some games can add extra rules and restrictions, such as formula limitations, themes, colors, etc. This adds to the fun of the game, forcing artists to think artistically. This game, however, has no restrictions. Images continue to evolve naturally until, at one point, they become difficult to evolve further, and the artists in the thread simply declare it closed to further posts, after which it is complete, and available for everyone to enjoy. Alright, enough bs...let's get the ball rolling! I'm going to start with a simple one - a spiral (sortof). Once again - how the image depends all depends on the players. Hopefully this idea will become as popular as it once was, we had some great fun, and made some great images. Here we go: FractalTag1 { fractal: title="Fractal Tag Image 1" width=640 height=480 layers=1 credits="Matthew Schultz;5/14/2008" layer: caption="Background" opacity=100 mapping: center=0/0 magn=1 formula: maxiter=100 percheck=off filename="tma.ufm" entry="mandaladeltajulia" p_bailout=7.0 p_seed=0.9375/0.34375 p_power1=3.0/0.0 p_power2=1.0/0.0 p_power3=1.0/0.0 p_budge=0.0/0.0 p_kludge=0.0/0.0 p_nudge=0.0/0.0 f_fn1=flip f_fn2=conj f_fn3=log f_fn4=ident inside: transfer=none outside: transfer=linear gradient: smooth=yes index=3 color=4534046 index=121 color=12701914 index=180 color=4146275 index=336 color=15788490 opacity: smooth=no index=0 opacity=255 } Tag, you're it! // Matt

Hey there, this is a GREAT game, you can post uf formula files as attachments how do i load this formula into uf ? i pasted the text into a .ufr file but uf4 refuses to load it ...

i pasted the text into a .ufr file but uf4 refuses to load it ... What you should be able to do is just copy the text itself, then, in UF4, create a new image (it doesn't matter of what - just pick whatever comes up on your screen, as it will all be momentarily erased) hit CTRL+V, and the fractal -should- appear. The advantage to posting text is twofold - one, there is nothing to download, copy and paste is stupid fast. Two, UFR files (this is why UF4 did not load the file) contain the actual raster image itself along with the definition, meaning that they are rather larger than needed, meaning people with dial-up are not happy. Granted, since I was last active in fractals, dial-up is not really as prevalent (read - if you're reading this on dialup which is NOT your phone on EDGE (come on...3g...) you need to upgrade, like now...), but hey man why send data for nothing? To post images, you will note that directly above edit > paste is edit > copy, and it does what you would expect it to do Try that and see if it works, if not, we can post params as ufr's.

No Fair!
I don't have UltraFractal!!
I have Chaos Pro, which can work with UF Formulas, but is free, so Everyone can play if we convert it to that program (it handles layers and is similar to UF in many ways - or so I have been told) (but I never played much with it's layering feature).
I could convert the above UF Formula with Chaos Pro's importer, but would not be able to spit back out an Ultra Fractal formula for others.
I've been thinking of fractal games for the forum, but so far all I came up with was "Variations On A Theme" where each week a new person would pick a very general idea for image content (ranging from formula variations to having the finished image look like a duck or something).
Then people just post from whatever program they have!
It's more open ended that way and does not limit us to one program.
But this is a GREAT start for those of us who have Ultra Fractal! I'll go check if there is a free trial period, and if it has limited functionality during that period. I may be able to participate if I can get the program! (I am not allowed to buy anymore software for a while yet... just blew my budget on a 3D Program, and my Princess has medical bills!).

you dont have to buy uf, just download it and use the trial version all the time !
and it worked now for me, uf had to download the formula !
lets see what i can do ...

GREAT! I thought the trial would have limitations preventing proper use (most commercial software does!). If not... I can play! Weee!

According to the 'license' if you want to use it more than 30 days, you are supposed to buy it, but it will not ever stop actually working. And it does not allow you to export images without watermarking, though there's a way around that as well (I won't actually say what it is, but I will say that it is a two key combination - the first key is CTRL+F, and the second is a single key found up in the top right portion of your keyboard ). The other way around that is of course a good friend with a copy . I will admit that my first few years of making fractals were done this way, as I did not have a credit card (read my profile - you will notice why), and I couldn't actually buy it. Of course, I now own UF, and lots of other things (and curiously, I no longer have any money...wonder how that happened) but my old method will work for this purpose.

Cool! I like the new layer, interesting direction! I'm really excited to see people are into this thing, as this is a crazy fun game! I can't wait to see what cool stuff we come up with! And now I'm off to bed, as I'm tired, it's 3AM, and my mouse ran out of batteries . I'm not going to post again for a few rounds to let others join in, but hopefully there will be some cool stuff here in the morning! // Matt ps - I've decided to try to use every single smilie on this board - the fro one will be last

Well... since the first two entries appear to be nothing but formula files, this may not be an issue (I kind of thought we'd be posting Images!). I should be able to post just formulas - for 30 days anyhow... I would abide by the agreement if I downloaded the software. I do some commercial work, and can't be seen as flaunting such things!!
