Hello,

My fractal music generator, Aural is now available for download.

Here's an screenshot of how it looks:

The program creates fractal music from various algorithms, such as Cellular Automata, AI, Random walks, and fractals like the Lyapunov fractal, and exports them as a Midi file, that you can import in another musical program, such as LMMS.
This program works more or less like Incendia, by using generators for composing music and transformations, for modifying the generated musical pattern. It also iterates the whole musical composition.
You can download it from  www.auralfractals.net

Thanks,

Aexion

ps. For examples (I posted some of them at soundcloud):
https://soundcloud.com/fractal_hermit/lyapunov-music
https://soundcloud.com/fractal_hermit/aural2048
pps. There's also a player at: http://www.incendia.net/aural that shows many Aural compositions too.

Still not yet, only tones and semitones. I plan to move out of the Midi definition, so most probably in the future I will supports it.
I must say something: Its very fun to code music, creating new generators and adding fractal transformations to them..
This program is just starting grin

Yes, I have.. actually I'm not very good at making fast danceable techhno music (My style is more or less classical.. you know, pianos, violins and the like),
but a friend is, so if you go the the music page you will find some tracks made by him using Aural.

Second track has a definite Oriental flair to it. Definitely my favorite of the two. I think these tracks would be nigh impossible for a human to play on a real piano, which adds to the coolness/uniqueness factor.

Fractal Bells started playing; I think I like that one even better!

Microtonal notes could have an interesting effect as well, instead of simply using the chromatic 12-note scale.

Many Thanks!!  smiley

Most Oriental music uses the pentatonic scale (the piano black key notes), hence why if you play something using only those keys, you will always end with an Oriental style music.

I'm thinking seriously about microtones, but I need to find a way to not use the Midi protocol, since it is restricted to the chromatic scale..(the solution is VST, but need to work more on them).

Without writing your own alt version of the MIDI standard, you could simply add or subtract up to 50 "cents" to each semitone? This will give you access to 1200 tones per octave. That's far more tonal definition than any human ear can perceive.

Cool!

However the UI doesn't update on my machine. I have to put another window on top of the program and change with Alt+tab to make it redraw itself. sad

The Midi standard is.. hard to code (actually a hell!). But I can made some changes, then only problem is the fact that I need to write a synthesizer on my own (VST is my next goal).
Having such large amount of tones will can be very interesting, since it opens a lot of possibilities for the generators and transformations. Rescaling everything in order to put them in the chromatic scale (and keeping harmony), was not easy, due to the fact that the scale is very limited in tone resolution.

Cool!

Hmm, can you tell me what kind of machine you have?, Is a very good time to get every possible combination (not to mention to nail down bugs!). So far it has been tested even on Mac and Linux (Wine and Parallels), but it seems that I didn't have covered all possibilities.

Thanks!

I have Windows 2008 server...

Many Thanks!
Now I understand.. That's one of the Windows Vista offspring's..  shocked
I have tested Aural on XP, 7 and 8, Mac and Linux (both emulated).. but jumped out over Vista..
Aural is an OpenGL based program and Vista in the past caused to me a large headache when enabling OpenGL.. but I have learned a the trick from Incendia, so let me prepare an special version for solving this issue smiley
Again Thanks!
