I ported my PixelBender version to a straight GLSL patch for QuartzComposer. The power value animates from 3 to 12 and back. Took about 8 minutes to render 720 frames at 720x576px with 4x supersampling.

Looks great! What is the formula for this spikey version of the Mandelbulb?

Thanks bugman. The spikes are generated by capping the z.y component when doing the fractal calculation. Setting the value at or near 0 and carefully tweaking the bailout generates some sharp spikes.

You can also get quite a nice fur effect too smiley :

I am just now getting around to viewing some of the animations I missed, and this one is excellent in many ways.  Plus the speed at which you rendered that many frames is getting close to real time viewing, compared to what it takes to generate such images in most other applications.

This has the appearance of an object that has been knitted by hand using a wool yarn.  A very nice effect!!

I think that if you colored it mostly green, with the spikes white, you would get a very cool looking cactus. And of course, having infinitely nested fractal spikes, this cactus would hurt a LOT.  evil

Someday, man will understand primary theory; how every aspect of our universe has come about. Then we will describe all of physics, build a complete understanding of genetic engineering, catalog all planets, and find intelligent life. And then we'll just puzzle over fractals for eternity.
