something strangely prevalent on these forums is people "signing" their posts, even though their name is written in bold text just to the left.

is it not absolutely clear who's making the post, or what's going on here?

I would say that the majority of Members use some form of "alias" when joining up.  And even clicking their "profile" link on the left-hand side would not show whom they really are.  So at times they may wish to "sign" their posts just like an email.  (I do not wish to have to remember that "lycium" is really "Thomas Ludwig".)   

I personally have set it up to use the automatic "signing" option for all my posts, especially since my "handle" is my company name.
