I put this together for some friends on Facebook who were having trouble getting started in Mandelbulber.   They are novices to fractals, so i put together a set of 29 starting points for exploration.

Also included are some of the gradients I've been making in Photoshop for use in Mandelbulber.   There are several variations on green, brown and tan for landscapes, chromatic rainbow colors, metallic fades, etc... (28 total):  http://www.miqel.com/presets_mandelbulber.zip

Thumbs of the locations:
(most are negative boxes, the ones in the 5th row are the same spot with different rotations applied, others are just a variety of territories)

This was kinda hastily crammed together  :smiley  but I'll probably do a nicer 'variety pack' in a few weeks.

Cool, glad these are helpful!
This set was put together hastily for a facebook friend, but i'll load another set of more varied presets and new gradients soon!

I would probably suggest that you don't go below scale -2 and above 2 too often, those sliced mandelboxes aren't that nice. -1.5 and -2 are great though. (Stupid thing puts a red line under "mandelboxes" ON THE FRACTAL FORUMS!)

Hi,

thank you, very goof idea. I just started to explore Mandelbulber at christmas and that it is just the way I try to get familiar with that great program.

In that context I have one more question: in the deviantArt Gallery there are some Mandelbulber-Fractals with param-settings in the form:

Mandelbulb3Dv17{
T.....K0...e2...61...2Q...UOX.fK
........... ..........U/4M.............
.....OaNavzcNaNaNaN4zD................
............................................}

I guess, that it shoul be possible to use theses params as well, but i didn't find out how. I can't copy & paste it via clipboard and it's a different format than the *.frac presets. So how can I use these params to play around and to explore the areas there.

Best regards

Hi and Welcome to fractalforums!

The params that start with Mandelbulb3Dv17{... are Mandelbulb3D parameters. Mandelbulb3D is another program, it is not the same as Mandelbulber. You can get it from the download section of this forum.

Enjoy!

ok, thank you for the tip !

So I use the above mentioned examples. I guess, it's enough stuff to explore anyway.

Anyone know how to update these so you can see them in mandelbulber 1.08 and above?  tease

The only solution I've found is to reset the view, but then it's (impossible?) to get the same starting point as the preset has so beautifully found!

only had a quick glance with an editor (at work). the params seem to be pretty old, v0.96 or earlier i guess, because there are sound_animation values in there. a text editor seems also to be an option to make them compatible.

So i tried to remove the following lines (marked in bold)... am I missing anything? Most of these AWESOME presets aren't compatible with later mandelbulber versions... it's still not working

ok, here' my try. worked with the first randomly opened file:  grin

locale_test 0.5; replaced with: Mandelbulber 1.0800000000000001; (i know it's a lie)

removed all lines starting with sound_animation_ (like you did)
removed line: file_sound sounds/sound.wav;

that should be it.
attached fract file for comparison

should be scriptable with a scriptable editor...

have fun!  A Beer Cup

seems not to work for other params (i miss for example mandelbox_rotation_main_<...> values in old parameter files). on the sourceforge page the oldest version available is 1.05 - doesn't work.
here i must surrender; give up . maybe buddhi has a solution??!
