Had a search but couldn't find this issue anywhere:

I'm trying to install the latest version of Mandelbulber on OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and get the error

GTK-WARNING **: cannot open display

I have my security settings set to allow only signed and App Store applications, and control-clicked to allow installation, which should have been successful but failed with this message. Attempting to run Mandelbulber by command line also results in the same message.

Also could I suggest that you consider signing the application as many users don't like disabling this setting.

Thanks!

Mac's have gone insane with their latest OSX incarnations.

I have hated everything since 10.5 and refuse to upgrade.

Also could I suggest that you consider signing the application as many users don't like disabling this setting.

From what I hear at the 3D Art Forums, it's just the opposite!  Nearly all users find this setting to be a terrible annoyance and wish it was never implemented!

The cure has something to do with a "Super User" or something.  At least getting Carrara to run, not sure if this is the same situation.

As for signing it - that's meaningless if you trust the source.  Then it leads to certificates expiring if they don't update as often as the OS wants, and other issues.

Look into Super Users and if that isn't the answer, I'll see about finding out how they got around this latest bit of Apple Nonsense over at the 3D Art Forums.

Good Luck with it, and Welcome to the forums!

I'm sorry but that's not a very helpful answer.

I didn't post to discuss the philosophy of signed versus unsigned applications, my question is

a) Is the install failing due to my security settings, despite running the installation as superuser (root)  - that's what the control-click does - and launching from command line using sudo mandelbulber.

Or

b) Is this error due to some other reason.

There is no documentation in the forum or wiki on common problems encountered during installation. I'd just like to get this up and running, so if we could stick to practical replies that would be great.

Cheers

As said, I have no idea other than the Super User thing.

I don't use 10.8.

As for Philosophy...  that's unavoidable!

I was just replying to your comment that "many users don't like disabling this setting" which is exactly the opposite of what I find to be true.  If you didn't want a reply to it, you shouldn't have posted it   afro

I had a look over at the other site where people had these issues, and the Super User thing fixed their problems, so I can't begin to guess as to what you should try.  Perhaps ask at the apple forums?  There should be many more mac users there!

Thank you for your reply.

With respect, the suggestion to sign the mandelbulber application was only a suggestion following my post. My intention in posting was to sort out the issues I have with installation of the package.

I'd already documented that yes, I've tried running as superuser. Control-clicking the application installs as root. sudo mandelbulber, obviously, runs the application as root - so we can rule this out as a solution.

What I'd like to ask is, what the 'GTK-Warning' message actually means, and under what circumstances it occurs. This could get us further towards solving the problem. I would expect that experienced users and/or those working directly in coding this application might know at what point the installation should throw this error. For example - if we've ruled out running as superuser, could I be missing a library, or does a package need updating? As I'm unfamiliar with this application, and there is no FAQ on the install process I don't have any leads to troubleshoot.

I'm unlikely to get any further on the Apple forums as they would be unfamiliar with this application. If you could give me a link to this 'other site' where users have encountered the same issue I could also look at their replies - as I mentioned I searched the forum with no results.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks visual.bermarte!  I hope that fixes it.

I meant no disrespect.  I'm just outspoken and opinionated   afro

As I said, I had no experience with this, but similar problems with programs getting rights.  Those were cured by super users, root stuff, and the terminal.

Here's just the first of many threads over at DAZ3D.com if it helps.  http://www.daz3d.com/forums/viewthread/5817/

There are mac users there, and may be able to help with things if the above posted solution is not enough.

Good luck with it!
