For anyone else who's interested in making plastic/metal/carbon buckyball models, and needs a voxel representation, I thought I'd upload the 2000x2000x2000 voxel data for the power 8 Mandelbulb (6 iterations, 'cosine' variation).

The 28 meg zip file below consists of two thousand 1-bit (black & white) PNG files (each @ 2000x2000 pixels).

Download.

I make no promises regarding the fragility or spikiness of this object, so handle with care wink

wow, this certainly compresses well. How many iterations were used in generating this set?

Have you thought about using a non-graphical representation, say, 1 bit per voxel, scanned in x,y,z order?
This would lead to a minimal uncompressed file size (i.e. 2000ˆ3 bits)

Yes, a single file voxel cube array would compress even better (because the info is compressed all around). I'm guessing around 3 megabyte even. Uncompressed though and we're talking 1 GB! smiley

I used PNGs mainly to make things more manageable (and because it's a popular format).

It uses 6 iterations. Maybe 5 is more sensible...

Oh just to add, if I understand correctly, I think a 6-sided depth map would be an interesting approach, and certainly good in terms of file size. Six 12-bit colour PNGs worth it would be, though the inside and possibly certain details on the outside won't be captured.
