Mathematica 8 Home Edition

Wolfram is now selling Mathematica 8 Home Edition. The Windows version was just recently added to their product page (previously only Linux and Mac versions were ready).

Until end of this year they also allow you to upgrade your Mathematica 7 Home Edition to version 8 for a third of the price of a new purchase (which amounts to USD 99 or EUR 95). This seems to be a "test run" to see how much revenue this generates. Normally the Home Edition is not upgradable (it is sold "as is").

One new feature of Mathematica 8 is the support for external OpenCL and CUDA code, which is the main reason I did this upgrade. The only downside with the Home Edition really is that it's a 32 bit application, so you can't really tackle problems that require to hold more than about 3GB of data in memory.
