Interpolating video

  Wouldn't it be lovely if there was a way of interpolating video frames either by  using a free program or having such a feature built in one of the fractal generators.  This means that instead of generating 2000 images which can take hours, perhaps just 400 images need be generated and the rest interpolated as this could save rendering time. It would be especially lovely for  2d zoom movies as just one or two images need be generated for every 2x zoom and the rest interpolated, so a zoom movie of a million times needs just  20 or 40 frames rendered instead of a thousand, saving a lot of rendering time  Fractal extreme uses this feature on its zoom movies. Are there any free interpolating video programs out there? Thank you.

Interpolating video frames doesn't work well, I remember trying it many many years ago, thinking I'd solved video compression or something 

(It turns out however that extrapolating frames from the current and previous frames, and storing the difference between the predicted and actual frames can give a remarkable compression boost!)

Interpolation is not about compression!

I am interested in extrapolation though cos that was hard to do when I was a kid doing polynomials.

On2 were my favourite video codec team doing compression and they may be able to help you out paolo, but again I did not get any sense of extrapolation from them so I definitely would like to know more lycium.
