I have been having some problems getting the visible light to be visible.  Sometimes it shows up and sometimes I just get some very dull light changes.  Is there something I have to do apart from just checking the visible positional light box?

Nope, but sometimes they are hidden or not visible when near to the highlighted object.

I am not very happy by now with the shape also, but i cannot solve the equation to get
the image x,y position for the 3d light position when having viewing angles and viewplane
shifts together  sad

A general hint for the positional lights:
Use the "mid" button to set the light on the bulbs surface, then position it with the sliders...
