Apparently on Friday, October 15, 2010.

What a legacy he has left behind; and what a tremendous influence his discovery has been in my life.

What a legacy he has left behind.

That's sad news.

We'll all mourn for him in our own ways.  And hope that whatever spiritual belief systems each of us hold treat him kindly in whatever comes next...

Agreed.

His Wikipedia Entry has a Death Notice, but that was all I could find too.

One would think this would be bigger news.

Russ - where did you hear this?

EDIT - Found this:  http://kottke.org/10/10/benoit-mandelbrot-rip

Agreed with all of you, I checked it out to make sure as well and then I turned my Deep zoom into a film to honor him on youtube.

I posted it in the (rate my movie) topic.

Everything seems to be gearing up. Tracking, obituary, even the bad taste humour.

So i guess big release coming later when people realise there is a need to announce it.

He has been a great inspiration to us all.  May he rest in peace.

Thanks.

That didn't turn up in any of my searches a couple hours ago!

And I even resorted to google  (many here know that I shun the use of google except as a last resort).

I'd call that the most credible account I've seen so far.  Very sad news.
