Being a fan of "Heaven and Earth" the game, I researched it to download it for free and I came upon this guy years ago.  He has been a developer and leader in many of these projects you guys are talking about.  http://www.iangilman.com/projects/  I loved the "Figure Ground" game site so much I wrote him an article about it.  http://blog.iangilman.com/2010/06/new-figure-ground-scenarios.html

I think this guy is worth watching if you're interested in new developments in Microsoft Labs.

Cheers!

Wow!

Imagine taking this up a level, and synthing video in this way, complete with sound where it exists, and so on.  You would have a sort of 4D photosynth, where not only places are internetworked, but history itself, as it unfolds.  Considering all the available video from private and public sources, the picture would be patchy now, but in a few years as the available content grows (exponentially, I think), it would be a viable idea.

Beyond that might be VR applications, where you can actually "go" to the places being synthed.

Truly remarkable technology.
