Do you think, with a little bit more work, the visible jump could be removed as well? or is it because of slight pattern changes as you zoom deeper?

I don't know. Yes there should be a slight distortion due to the varying shape and to the fact that the zoom might be not linear, but I guess that the jump is mostly due to the animated gif itself.

The zoom is interpolated logarithmic, that should be ok. Only the position is not interpolated with respect for the zoom, but if you dont move then this step can come from the preview itself. There is still a little issue that i havnt found yet, for such gifs, use a 1:1 framecount and set the framecount for the end-keyframe to zero. That should give the expected result... hopefully.
