Image size in Gallery

yes, i have silently increased image sizes, to 2400x2400, max file size is 1,2 mb ( do not exceed that )
if the gallery does not scale down uploaded images, it can handle big files ...

and i wanted to allow desktop size images ( 1920x1280 ) but i did it silently to check if it works or
make other problems.... but it seems to work

Hmm, actually it is 1.14 mb, but there seems to be another issue, when i tried uploading a 1800x1280 pix image
with 1.12 mb, it just says: Error 500 - Internal server error

That happened to me as well, only in German.[Luckily I speak German]  My image was 1500x1500 and less than 1.2mb

What, you don't know the latest 256KB image format

No, seriously, 256KB means 256 Kilobytes : it's the maximum file size allowed to attach a file to a reply. Your file was too big. So use the gallery instead of posting the image directly in the reply, and paste the gallery link in your reply.

Thanks bib!  KB that term is not used in the USA with fractal programs as far as I know.   Also I just downloaded Caoscope &  I remember somewhere here the powers that be had a hissy about a member using Bitmap images.  Problem is that chaoscope only renders with bitmaps.  Are they the evil program?

What is the file size (MB)?

Kilobytes = KB 0 - 1,023
Megabytes = MB 1,024 - 1048,576
Gigabytes = GB 1,048,575 - 1,073,741,823
(approximate values?)

Anyways right clicking on any image in the files will show the size of the image.
Use a paint program to resize it, like Gimp or paint.net.

Choose .jpg and decrease the size to show the quality in a viewer.
I think the size needs to be 1000 x1000 or less considering 72 ppi (pixels per inch) or dpi (dots per inch) Same thing.
The size must not exceed  about 1MB  I think it's 1.14MB

BMP always holds every single dpi as a value in memory
JPG compresses them and makes them take up less memory by "combining" pixels into each other so fewer pixels need to be stored in memory.  It uses a technique that at at a higher level an eye wont notice any loss of detail, usually 80% and up is good but I have had to make it even smaller sometimes.  Usually if you "save for the web" (an option in photoshop) it tells you the size of your files and allows you to compress it further.

BTW, I have had no problems posting in the gallery following those rules I mentioned above, AND;  I only link to files in posts. I never attach files to posts because I know how screwed up it makes the whole database if they get deleted, lost, or corrupted.  I would suggest not allowing attachments in posts.

thunderwave somewhat helpful  The main problem as I see it it that what your saying is not general knowledge.  Also when posting an image in gallery it just mentions the pixil size now 2400x2400?  soo ya wait & wait then finally ya get told that the Mb is too large. Also for example an 800x600 image will show having 1.37MB?  but when I go to pqint to eresize i can only resize with pixels.   Newbies are not gona have a clue.- nor should they.

I ran some tests,  anything at 1.14MB or less and larger then 1000 x 1000 brought up the error page no matter the dimensions I used  (3200 x 3200, 2400 x2400, 1200 x 1200). Interesting I also got an error about not having a title, my title was "test".  I renamed it "test01" got the error message "Must have a title".

if the image was 1000 x 1000, but larger then 1.14MB it said Image too large.
Anything at or less 1000 x 1000 dimensions and 1.14 and smaller went through.

So to struggle with getting an image smaller then 1.14 and the 1000 x 1000 dimensions you have to play with the quality of the image.  Which means sliding down the quality of the .jpg file until it's at 1.14MB or less.  Does paint.net, or gimp do this?   I only use Photoshop.

There are other ways to get the image size to go down,  In Photoshop, I tried clicking progressive in the save for web, as well as adding a slight blur to it, you can then balance between blur and quality.

As mentioned earlier, Trifox is away on holiday and will deal with these issues when he returns.  Earlier in this thread he describes what he was doing to the settings, so keeping within those parameters should avoid any problems.

Of course, if you find the file size limitations too restrictive, you can always host the images externally to the site!

hi there, the problem is that the server cant deal with such big images, * php memory restrictions *

i just thought it could work when scaling was disabled, so it is a pitty, but i will reset the image sizes
to as they where before, when i am back home next week the hotel has nice internet acess here in poland/gdansk

I tried to post an image in a reply. Problem is it only allows 256KB.  Sorry folks but have no idea what that is.  I know jpeg, bitmap, png.  So when i tried to make it smaller repeatedly I got the message that I had already tried previously, soo rejected. Yes I must be an alien here!

256KB refers to memory size of the image not format, 256KB in any Format is 256KB, compress it in memory size not Dimensions.
