I think I finally got the rendering algorythm correct.
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/42805413/

2 spherical transforms, which although it's the same basic formula, the effect is quite different in 3 dimensions.

This volume was 512x512x512 voxels in size, which is about as high as my computer can go. The fractal generation took about 10 minutes, and the render took 58 minutes.

I had already visited the site after seeing your same posting about this on the Apophysis email discussion list.  I assume the bottom portion of the image is the shadow from the actual "object".  But what I found interesting was the background, with its circular gradient pattern of rings (like that seen in a cross-section of a cut tree).  Was it your intention to not have that background smoothly blend together as a single surface, and to produce the ring effect??

Paul,

Honestly, I hadn't noticed the effect, it was not intentional.

Actually I've been afraid this would happen, as soon as I get a chance, I'd really like to add texturing including bumpmapping for the regular surfaces, something to break up the surface a bit so I don't end up with a gradient like this from lighting.

There's still a long way to go   smiley

Sorry Paul forgot to answer the first question,

Yes, the shadow is showing up at the bottom of the image. (The shadow could have been placed better, but for now I'm really not paying much attention to composition)

I'd like to end up with more color in the shadows from transparency, but I'm going to have to leave that alone for a while and work on other more pressing issues.

Thanks
Don

Thank you for answering the question, and adding the additional comments about the different aspects of your development.  I did not believe that the circles had been intentional, but had to ask to make sure.

And I truly do understand the time constraint to work on such a project.    smiley
