Well done Aleph0, a custom gradient is the way to go, along with adjustable boundary thickness. The program I'm working on also does that. Here's my version with a simple smooth gradient with midpoint 0.25, and 25 samples per pixel.
Thanks Garth. Nice image. Yes, smooth grey-scale can give great results too. There was a beautiful grey-scale render of the Flake location posted by hapf in the Mandel Machine thread recently:

Colour renders of that area can also look great, but for me the marvellous symmetries and complexity of that location are best appreciated with a minimal colour gamut.

Good to see and hear that others are exploring similar avenues.

I should also mention Paul Derbyshire's (Pauldelbrot's) awesome DE images and techniques.

Thanks!

I am glad that some of my work is helping to inspire others, and is being built upon.

Got distracted by  palettes, color waves and other stuff ... but I found another black-and-white location. Fits the serie, since the location is also in the area where the main bulbs fade out and the main  antenna begins.

I love black and white fractals too. They can look very classy. Hard to make them corny.  grin
