We've recently been making a bunch of content for our up coming live performance using a bunch of fractals. Most of the fractal formulas used are either by Kali or by me. The animation was done in Touch Designer using Syntopias DE-Raytracer. These are meant to be mixed with live visuals/camera feeds so some of content is sparse at times.

woot, congrats for these visualisations, the technique you used there is very harmonic and a great realisation of visualisation of the music, i wonder how you achieved such smooth results, you must be using more than just simple beat detection ? to achieve the speeding, how much is automatized and how much handwork is in there ?!!

gotta watch them all now

and further information: no need to include the embed code, just paste the vimeo video link!

Thanks a lot. Almost none of it is using beat detection (except for a bit of the flame animation in Uphold done in JWildfire).

To do the animation and renderings I basically ported Syntopia's render engine (GLSL shader) (with permission) into a patch I built in an application called Touch Designer. Touch Designer is a realtime audio visual production environment (node based programming) so I was able to edit and animate the fractals in realtime using a keyframe editor similar to what you would see in an application like After Effects or Ableton. Being able to edit individual keys on a timeline was essential. There are also a set of LFO's to modulate parameters in a similar way to an audio synthesizer. I also built into it a transport and timeline that was based on BPM and beats not frames so I could animate according to tempo.

I would like to share this patch eventually but I've built it using the newest beta version of Touch which isn't free to the public yet. There is a free version available but it won't load this patch. When it is available I will definitely let the forum know.

Yeah I tried pasting the Vimeo link but in the preview it didn't display the player. I'll try again next time.

I have some ideas about asking the various 3d fractal software developers to collaborate on the ultimate software. The speed and programability of Fragmentarium with the rendering quality and features of Mandelbuld 3d and Mandelbulber along with the animation abilities of my patch - but that is a topic for another post. Maybe one day?

Here is a screenshot of the app I built

Totally you can find it here: Derivative.ca

There is a free version available that has almost all the functionality of the commercial version except it is limited by 1280x1024 resolution. The GLSL stuff I'm doing will work it the official (077) release I've just been working in the beta(088) so it won't load.

Totally awesome! The sync is simply perfect. The dancing fractal in the last clip looks so funny.  grin

I'm envious for sure. syncing at this stage without beat detection is quite an accomplishment.
nice work!
