I am assuming it is motion blur that causes the streaks and <insert scientific term for why close by water droplets attract> causing the feathering patterns.

All the high speed bubble pop pics show very similar results...

I love the halved one. Looks like an egg-shell.

cKleinhuis: Maby it helps to get some sort of fan to keep them up in the air longer, so they have longer time to freeze.
Simply breathing on them probably won't work too well because your breath likely warms them up too much.
