Still hammering this one out...

If Meaning uses purpose to create or protect the meaning.

The meaning of Life is any purpose in creating or protecting Life.

The meaning of Death is any purpose in creating or protecting Death.

The meaning of anything is the purpose in creating or protecting the meaning of that anything.

If the Purpose is to destroy a meaning, this is not the Purpose of the meaning.

The purpose must protect the meaning in order to have purpose.

The meaning of life is not death.
Because Life's purpose is not Death

The meaning of death is not life
Because Death's purpose is not Life

The meaning of Life is Love when the purpose of Love creates Life.

The meaning of Life is Fear when the purpose of Fear protects Life.

Basically boiled down, If Meaning has it's Purpose, it's Meaning is Meaningful.

So long as there is Purpose to Meaning, it's Purpose will become it's Meaning.

Life...
The meaning of life is it's purpose.
Its purposes can be, Love, Healing, Protecting, Care, etc...so long as these purposes Create or Sustain Life.

Death...
The meaning of death is it's purpose.
It's purposes can be, Fear, Murder, Ignorance, etc...so long as these purposes Create or Sustain Death.

The Meaning of Meaning is to have it's Purpose.

The Meaning of Purpose is to be it`s Meaning.

Meaning without Purpose has no Meaning.

Purpose Protects or Creates its Meaning.

Meaning Needs it's Purpose.

Purpose Loves it's Meaning.

The Meaning of Life is it's Purpose and it's Purpose is to Create or Protect it's Meaning.

...Ashes Mi...

I wouldn't assign negativity to death.  It's simply the breaking down of one form of existence into another.  Death is not always convenient, but neither is life.  When you get down to it, life causes death.  You got a problem with death, you got a problem with life.

Death of the individual is necessary for the species to evolve. On long timescales, the environmental conditions keep changing drastically. Survival of the fittest means that life can follow these changes. An immortal being would eventually be fit for a biotope that no longer exists anywhere on the planet.

This explains why no immortal species exists on planet earth. One would expect them to dominate the ecosystem, with such a big advantage. But in fact any species that might ever have invented immortality went extinct when the next big shift of environmental conditions occurred. One such big change, by the way, can easily be caused by overpopulation: extreme scarcity of food.

As for the purpose of life ... did you ever realize how organisms became more complex as the ages passed? At first it was molecules that could be puzzled together in a particularly large number of ways. Then it was the self replication of such molecules - in a way, the first act of copying information. This capacity for information processing was steadily improved as time went by. At some point, genes as information infrastructure were complemented by other communication and processing mechanisms: hormones, pheromones, nervous systems.

Yet faster communication and more powerful computation were layered on top of the biological mechanisms when some species began to form societies. The dance of bees, human speech, are examples of real time communication about abstract topics. The spoken word was an informational revolution, because it reduced the "cost" of communication by several orders of magnitude.

The invention of writing, along a similar note, reduced the cost of information storage and retrieval by several orders of magnitude.

The odd one out is the invention of money. When money flows, it carries information. Information about needs and wants, information about availability of goods and services. The "invisible hand" is invisible because it is not made from atoms, but made from bits. Money is largely decentralized, but had crucial benefits for the organization of large scale societies. (And it has downsides, too, but let's not digress.)

Then the Gutenberg press came along, and it made copies of information several orders of magnitude cheaper and more widely available than handwriting. Reading and writing are regarded as essential social skills since then.

Quite a few other "new media" were invented from there, like radio, cinema, the telephone, television. But those had high barriers of entry (for potential senders), or low reach (regarding the number of potential receivers), and just didn't provide the "several orders of magnitude" improvement required for an informational revolution.

And then came computers, which made storage and processing of information several orders of magnitude cheaper. Shortly afterwards, the internet, which made any-to-any communication several orders of magnitude cheaper. The internet is not a medium. The internet is not just an infrastructure for new media. The internet is the latest informational revolution. Nobody can say with certainty what effects it will have.

It all started with a single copy of a single molecule. And things have steadily marched into a distinct direction since then.

> Death of the individual is necessary for the species to evolve.

Only if:

1. The species has limited resources
or
2. Change is limited to the standard evolutionary model (e.g. where only species evolve and not individuals).

I agree with you hobold. Even if a true IMMORTAL of course would survive any changes in biotopes and even universal constant changes... wink

To add to what Benesi stated, death is a state of change and it in turn brings life and can help sustain life. Organic matter dies, but sustains and encourages the life of those things that are living. Such as a fire destroying a forest and a new forest grows in the place of the old that has left behind fertile soil  and the wind carries the seeds of that which was destroyed and allows it to cultivate in another place. The death of an animal or manimals (yes manimals because man is still an animal, rawr grin), other organisms (complex and simple) feed off of the remains sustaining it's life and others use it as a means of procreation for the continuation of the species.

The big "meaning of life" is just a "means to an end". ..........................to set a self-fullfilling question during lifetime in our minds.

Some say that life has not purpose other than serve as a way for something to grow, then, this thing that must grow isn´t alive yet, but should be born from this known purposeless life.
This is what we see in nature, the soil serves a base for something to grow, and there´s no other way to achieve this purpose.
THis idea is fractal, too, wich probes it is true.
