I think they are basically sphere inversion fractals by another name, but might be wrong

They might be sphere-inversion fractals, although it seems like many seemingly different approaches lead to strikingly similar patterns, essentially suggesting equivalence in the methods...
Maybe, there is some fundamental set of functions that together can form all kinds of IFS ever. If we could classify them all, we could engineer fractal shapes quite easily, I'd guess.
