The birds gather in shape-shifting flocks called murmurations, having migrated in the millions from Russia and Scandinavia to escape winters frigid bite. Scientists aren’t sure how they do it, either. The starlings' murmurations are manifestations of swarm intelligence, which in different contexts is practised by schools of fish, swarms of bees and colonies of ants.

As far as I am aware, even complex algorithmic models haven’t yet explained the starlings’ aerobatics, which rely on the tiny birds' quicksilver reaction time of under 100 milliseconds to avoid aerial collisions—and predators—in the giant flock.

Beautiful and I like that you put it under fluid dynamics - just like crashing waves.

Fluid dynamics is where it belongs, which, is one reason it is soooooo special
If you extend the thought to molecular movement, and what is happening all around you, you just might become enlightened, turn into buddah (or whatever)...and simply disappear out of shear satisfaction

Truly amazing, I got goosebumps when I saw it.
We have this phenomenon just outside our garden, nowhere near this scale though...
I will try to get our small version of it on film someday, and maybe travel to where those girls in the canoe were... wink
Thank you for posting this Louis!
