Title: 3D mandelbrot found at last?!
Post by: twinbee on April 22, 2008, 06:03:45 PM
Well after all these months, I think we've finally found the 3D Mandelbrot

 :what:

Yes it's true, and here's the proof

Okay, it only looks a bit like a Mandelbrot, but hey. This is perhaps the best real-life 'fractal' type shape I've ever seen. Yes, even better than the Romanesco brocolli.

It's a sea urchin, but a very rare kind. Here's where it came from: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jurvetson/751085804

the patterns are indeed beautiful, but it is a stacked sea urchin, not a single one :D

First I thought about a pumpkin, forgot it at last when I had a look here http://www.flickr.com/photos/jurvetson/751085804  :)

Groan I think you might be right somehow. And it's not even that rare. I recalled buying something similar at a beach souvenir shop once, so I had a look for it.

There it was! Right on the cupboard shelf! It was weird to see what I thought was something rare in my own home without me realising it.

I compared it to the one in the pic. It turned out almost identical. The level of detail was barely worse in mine, and the colour was slightly more washed out, but not by much.

Sorry about the photo quality - crappy camera - can't take close ups.

Thats so cool! I'll have to show off my  fractal shell
