Title: New gallery from me
Post by: twinbee on December 20, 2011, 04:33:40 PM
Some of the pics I have previously posted on these forums, but a lot are entirely new. There's also a couple of new videos I've created. Enjoy!

Thank you for sharing your pictures and videos. I like the spine in front of the fountain at most.

Good to know, that there are still some interesting areas inside the Mandelbulb.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, for sheer variety, the Mandelbox comes out on top, but there are still a few surprises in the Mandelbulb left like you say.

If anyone wants hires versions of the videos, let me know.

amazing images!
let me tell you, that skytopia and the mandelbulb images there, with their unglazed pottery look, finally addicted me to 3d fractals.
and while i mostly work with the mandelbox and derivates today, these bulb images are still the real deal for me!  :beer:

Woh!

So glad to see some new stuff from your lovely renderer (and you ;) )
The spine videos are incredible!  :o

A bit curious about how many iterations you used for them...

Good to see some new work from you Daniel, cool fly over the spine, but maybe with more iterations it would have been more interesting, like in these pictures for example:

Thanks all muchly for the comments! :D

Regarding iterations, I used 16 for the first and 23 for the second (give or take 1). I experimented with adding more and less. Interestingly, adding more iterations can sometimes *remove* detail as nice parts can become 'built' over. Also the 'near misses' in the videos would have become crashes which I wanted to avoid this time ;)

Here's the full resolution versions - they're much nicer:

Bravo Sir Daniel! Great page and very entertaining fiction around the mandelbulb. And thanks again for opening the door to the world of 3dfractals.

I must say I am extremely impressed by your navigation in these two movies.
When I did my "spine" image with Mandelbulb 3D I could hardly navigate to get to the tip...

Great update Daniel, i love the movies and your special soft shading what makes them so appealing!

I also think that there is very much not seen yet, for example did i never seen images from some cavities that are popping up at iteration 25, somewhere beside the spine (p8 sine bulb with negative z).

Attached 2 pics with 25 and 30 iterations.

At start of your video there are also some cavities on the lower left side visible.

Great stuff! Like Taurus, your first class pictures got me interested in the Mandelbulb in the first place and made me download "M3D - the prehistoric version" ;-). Since then I hardly ever touched ChaosPro or Apo 3Dhack anymore. The first thing I tried was to find the spine inside of the Mandelbulb. Until now, I've never succeeded... So, any of you willing to tell me the secret?

Thanks bib! That takes me there in a jiffy! But it still doesn't tell me how to get there... I tried it with the sphereinv method when I saw Jesse's and KW's pics a couple of months back, but all it got me was frustration ;-) Never mind, though. Don't want to hi-jack this thread, so let's all go back to the Skytopia website and revel in the sheer beauty of all pics and movies there...  :beer:

Yes, not bad for a straight line through space ;) I still want to study NURBs before I create curved paths.

Which is very nice I must say! Also see next comment...

Spines are surprisingly common inside the Mandelbulb. Any direction, you'll probably see at least a couple. See this pic (http://www.skytopia.com/stuff/spines.jpg)

Okay, I've uploaded an easy to use explorer. It's a bit slow, but it's easy to navigate (and you can use keys 1-9 to affect speed). Smash through the surface to find dozens of spines!

Download:
http://www.skytopia.com/stuff/MBulb-Explorer.zip

Code:
------------------------------- USE LEFT HAND:
  w
a   d   ====  move body
  s

q   e   ====  zoom in/out
------------------------------- USE RIGHT HAND:
  t
f   h   ====  Move head
  g

r   y   ====  roll/rotate
------------------------------- Other:
1-9     ====  CHANGE CAM SPEED
<  >    ====  CHANGE ITERATION

Thanks all again for the great feedback! :)

Maybe you did not notice, but there is now an Inside mode in M3D. (dropdown at the bottom of the Formula window). Also, make sure to cut at z=0 to see the inside.

Thanks Daniel, that picture helps a lot! I guess all this time I've been looking to deep in the bulb to see the obvious... I feel slightly stupid  :embarrass:

@bib: but not that stupid... From my latest 8 images, 6 were inside renders  ;D ;D

Sorry :D my mistake I should have said that you have to use Integer Power with Z multiplier=1 (by default it is -1 and there are no spines)

Twinbee thank you for publishing your program. After I put a recent SDL.dll in the path of the executable it works well. It its nice to navigate inside the Mandelbulb. Is there a way to get a greater main window to render some pictures like the pictures you published in the gallery?

The are some different types of spines, this one looks like a fir tree. Suits to christmas.

Oops, yeah I forgot about SDL. Apologies to those who found that error - I've included it this time:

http://www.skytopia.com/stuff/MBulb-Explorer.zip

Also included is a slower but higher quality exe with quadruple the resolution (300*300). Not hi-res by any means, but for that, you'll have to wait for the final program I'm working on ;)

Nice fir tree indeed! That could do with some lights...
