Title: Multiple Traps Post by: _db_ on April 08, 2008, 01:24:52 AM Fractal Art can be quite challenging. There are an infinite number of images to start with (although most are variations on a theme), hundreds of formulas and transformations to apply, many of which have dozens of parameters to manipulate. One could spend literally their whole life just thoroughly exploring all the possibilities of a single formula such as the Orbit Traps UF3 used here. What makes it so challenging is that what may seem to be a minor change to a single parameter can result in a total transformation of the image in an entirely unanticipated way.
Needless to say, most of the variations are basically noise, but once in a while a shiny nugget appears in the gravel. After several hours of wading through mind-numbing textures, patterns, chaotic lines, etc. that resulted from different combinations of trap shapes and various other parameters an very interesting effect appeared. Changing the Trap Merge mode to max(A,B) suddenly had a profound impact. Another hour of two of tweaking form, colour & composition resulted in this... (http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/7447/multipletrapsdbba4.th.png) (http://img232.imageshack.us/my.php?image=multipletrapsdbba4.png) BTW, this uses the same formula as the images in the Julia Variations post but starts with a section of a Mandelbrot spiral like the small ones that are seen ducking behind the flat bands everywhere. Thanks for taking a look. db Title: Re: Multiple Traps Post by: cKleinhuis on April 08, 2008, 01:47:52 AM hui, this has great 3d look, so, you were using an orbit trap, what shape did the trap have ?
the outcome is fantastic, can you render a wider version ? Title: Re: Multiple Traps Post by: _db_ on April 08, 2008, 02:37:36 AM hui, this has great 3d look, so, you were using an orbit trap, what shape did the trap have ? the outcome is fantastic, can you render a wider version ? Thanks very much Trifox, glad you liked it. This image uses both the Egg & Spiral traps on the same layer. The UF4 parameter file is below so you can see the details. You're welcome to explore it for your own use and please post anything interesting to the forum here. If you do play with it note how dramatically the Trap Merge option changes the structure. cheers, db multiple_traps_db { ; Copyright © 2008 by Don Berendsen. ::Wry1bhn2tv5yytuNSY49uK/OwSrSqMRmsbeTJFXccmlzUzik9nCWESCxUkMEU+c080PN4VQR AJP7yC4VmNQ3oRjLfS6v4hG2+WWxv88Teeti2Ce2mzXKaF1F8v22wqlfN/tNefTk3eKDC99O xFHP1mFj+eFsr8GZGqcthLrKu0KqKzAffv9N8cRrMbz/sq07VeDvMXyL/1wXSfhaOdzzP15c 3oem3eqKPrfUZSp3eWdXg28vU9xD24VVz2LavmFQhmSqSZNjCZb2VusPCNH5nry5ZyqDtFqE 85nOzqrFlH7Gi9Un5NZ+bh40o4E/AIOaXQ6L+b99DT2FGkkkuLJNwHT9OzOSzhk0oE/thgyb W5Rqskku1HpnPU1QpKrP1ZfXoCMlXUmVzb2fiv/9sqDH8OIK4lszU583bZl5sm8tXOcejyLK Zaumt5fTm5Fv1U1uxr+ryWWTbm/LUY+ad13ogCd//bMRR1l2sAO4/8TiSpIn3vYpqDHo+VWV y9oqvIPLkybIIC2RdlcadfLElcWzUvTjTAATBtsN/8fibvsvQPTV2+5/Tzbi2/QtjQlu8vTz 22uae//S262u8BtlQt4h++qI0bt9aNPbfRlkLH74+qiqmscBNvL3z1Ne41zSeb2GlBvvsZOK jt2Nql0yArQ1yJav3pqic1ybkqSqmc9hvsa2bWRhatip2aRbMpH9mfezY63vKs1f45hV3taz F57i6OTTZ1FanIM8Uw36Ofc4S5+svM7EoZ+1BbomtfbwmanMtpFoDhsv/Df5f86PqN/Hbk9m kmZLNiBZf5GLQ2PtyXEnG+RLhZ/0NWiy+tZHDknY0iH/4xRD0/K50BwuKXWwUhQ1At9SKp6X kWAYy2mKRe/ma/txL+LZqux+gfW00U1I72RrFgjNi8u18cB7YVZ/quqhDN8/6Cvc/1A90gdu mWpvkz7sqFn6TMJZcepbOAgxAAZ+rDAoHgaOd3pMLc2SraNtrKEuw3T05OqO0mFGN35OjSx/ lrP89Gfn/N6M0iQwk189t6dlKI0tn8mFTqRj3m9iS6sZLdalqulLCTfL0tWqzd9XB1XeYURf ZQUmM3xuVIWe+otx7cfR39ejnr+grtFOIvRcYR8U1pljLZR2yr1nndlobeesP6eyr5sWpigU eUv/9NYMN7bq/efdPYUttQLU6zsqSVoaE7NNUdOaeo6aqr49OrgLyrk7rq5zLm9XQezN4aBY sH101g7pIsc/xQbVy2pG18VdQ74Yn0WQoLZJcwbF8F3gqMfRyZSlHV09kLcYwo6202rkn9Ts ler3HCgfk+MFaZ7iOMV8tFh5q5tpHtJk3sKz7suqCN1QL7IPTc+M95WYt8irLduv8TInsG6I Ilb0nAoRr95jEL9z049mgJXcJElCTnsvJnvdH4oNFXywe9xRcopobdrzOmsIeV08RdcEXGnh PDyiuKLodmrKsdW1ICqPUlfwtdofqg+G8lXw/o3Vc1oZYXL0Tkk1imJUAYDKBTQpFXHDfKoE YHKB2gSgRoEYDKBrgSgRoEoBlMEAdoEsCKBWgSgJoEYCKB2gSwKoEYCKBWgSgVoEYBKBrhSg RoEYAKBNc6GC62QR32E9dywq7TAdYF9NNmmKj0KNnHAWaPeDtCGpV67j1AWzJoZaFYnWBmpV wdoVw9oVgdaFcfaF8QaFcHaF8AaFYhWBmpVgVaF8JoVL7zHsGR3guT/cqNemtosaFyCPzwcY EppZfJPbpPmRaadwIPbZMMcgaNPD04Z3kCruXwAPDuPPDswzAb8MwMPDMwzAj8M4R8MwOPDu DPDuDPD75Z1ViyxvcMaDnhmxZ4nCnh2xZoNcGaEnh2wZ4KcGaEnh2wZ4KcGuCnhWwZoJcGaC nh2wZ4qttoJcGaBnhWxZoFcGuGnhGxZoBcGaHnhrwZoxv7FagmhLpZ4aaGummhGoZoNaGanm hmpZ4doZ49oZodaGefaG+QaGeHaG+AaGahmhmpZoVaG+JoZ4DpZ4ngmh3lmhPkmhWoZ4doZ4 joZ4jpZoJaGagmhGpZoJaGagmh3nmhWoZoNaGammhGoZoRaG+IaGanmh3hmhGoZHV75oF9+f v9KadqU97//7C6ieuH161uO7N2vtb8ojTvzz7+o1yzVV02thfPf6CnBw3OPRZO/7Z786/Bdj TDhwEYwaUwgZ/BDQQQ/wrMmEihxpRjNhRD2VRIewKihDWDiTiix0dK/HaLOdqt4d+xppP/0g QEdTy5c2YCPqZBEFNnuaGnHIKrnV4INQLhXHDVCPZNMYZ2uI6feBWC+/QglTyC64oTdFn6KO 1Vcqr4UXxpuiTdFn6KO1Vcqr4UXxpuiTdFn6KO1Vcqr4UXxpuiTdFn6KO1Vcqr4UX5vrqrkM IdQAmcjOKxhjW2l6jBRj98njDn1Xx/xyhoPCr1yQNKGFEhGmpG8/cKZ8Kb/7HbquUm/AxMcC X4EuwJchT4CnwFOhLcCX4EuwJchT4CnwFOhLcCX4EuwJchT4CnwFOhLcCX4EuwJchT4CnwF/ N91CxPZ6VnY+13IJBCmebPCSvpBtX3CAHaLNCjoOOaOe0lIIG3N/OiEENr4x0rbRK85lBZR+ uWHEVyO/OdgLzUDdnSUDvYIBRmFTRlpTNAwzP9/AN6rEzC== } Title: Re: Multiple Traps Post by: cKleinhuis on April 08, 2008, 02:44:40 AM can you describe where to find the layered orbit traps method in uf ?

Select Orbit Traps (UF3) from dmj3.ucl for the Outside Coloring formula. Pick expert from the Show Options: list. Enter 2 (or more if you're brave) for the Number of Traps: option. There's about a zillion options available, I've played with them for several hours and find it a bit mind-boggling... btw. you can upload uf formula files as attachments :police: Thanks for the tip. Title: Re: Multiple Traps Post by: cKleinhuis on April 08, 2008, 03:21:23 AM i see, thank you , the orbit trap is the most powerfull one and with those beatiful variations it is really exciting to play around ...

O0 O0 O0 It certainly is. I'd like to find other combinations that introduce structures that have dimensionality and integrate well with the underlying image like this one did. If you run across any please pass them along. Most of the variations I found were 'typical' distortions, curved lines, etc. Although there are many beautiful images that can be derived from such things, I like the simpler forms and dimensionality like this one has and would like to understand what combination of parameters is more likely to bring them out. Title: Re: Multiple Traps Post by: cKleinhuis on April 08, 2008, 04:29:12 AM have you seen my trap images using the supershape formula ?
http://local.wasp.uwa.edu.au/~pbourke/surfaces_curves/supershape/ this one uses an supershape formula pumped through a spiral function ... (http://www.fractalforums.com/gallery/0/63_13_03_08_11_33_48_4.jpg) here we have a clear superformula shape (http://www.fractalforums.com/gallery/0/63_13_03_08_11_33_48_3.jpg) the guys from apophysis build the supershape formula into apophysis as another standard transform due to my suggestion ... some general words about orbit traps, orbit traps with closed shapes ( like quads or rings ) do not make the nice looking streaks, you got the streaks from an orbit trap converging against infinity by some values, e.g. the hyperbola one or the supershape like above .... another thing to mention is the high frequent noise appearing when using orbit traps, so every orbit trap should stop at a relatively low iteration count, most of the trapping algorithms in uf have an option for that, and setting the start iteration will also get rid of some big shapes ... ::) and another thing which comes to my mind is the position of the trap, when centered at 0.0 every trap is coming out exactly at the center of a minibrot, if you place the shape near the center, the place will be on that relative position on succsesive minibrots... :police: the images are rendered with the program i am currently developing, with this program you can enter any trap function you like *in upcomming version* and a layering mechanism for the coloring methods of inner and outside fillings will also be available ... :D O0 Title: Re: Multiple Traps Post by: _db_ on April 08, 2008, 05:04:18 AM Your images are very striking, thanks for sharing them Trifox.
I just started with fractal art about 2 months ago so supershapes and the intricacies of formulas are all new to me. I really appreciate all the very useful info regarding orbit traps. It's a bit frustrating right now as I can only visualize what's going on in a simplistic and rather vague way which is no doubt rife with misconceptions. :sad1: The info you've provided will be helpful, thanks very much for sharing it. BTW, Rob Bunney tweaked my fractal on the UF Mailing List and I did some further refinements to the palette and ended up with a really nice variation: (http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/6216/multipletrapsdb2rkbnauk2.png) Title: Re: Multiple Traps Post by: cKleinhuis on April 08, 2008, 02:01:57 PM is there any reason why the images are so small ?
