Title: Best of the best 3D fractals over the web Post by: twinbee on March 26, 2008, 07:29:22 PM Whilst creating a new web page entitled Mystery of the REAL, 3D Mandelbrot Set (http://www.skytopia.com/project/fractal/mandelbrot.html), I compiled a collection of the best 3D fractals after filtering through literally tens of thousands. I take no credit for the pictures themselves, some of which are created from members of this forum too.
Hope you all enjoy! If anyone here a recommendation, please let me know, and I may add it (though I'm also going to be very picky :P). http://www.skytopia.com/project/fractal/mandelbrot.html#best Title: Re: Best of the best 3D fractals over the web Post by: cKleinhuis on March 26, 2008, 09:41:40 PM excellent selection!
ah, now i get it, it is yours site, i was wondering- the mandelbrot 3d structure looks so damn realistic, i want to buy one and place it on my desktop table O0 :police: also, i want to remind you of inserting your website to your user profile! :police: (http://www.skytopia.com/project/fractal/mands3.png) Title: Re: Best of the best 3D fractals over the web Post by: lycium on March 27, 2008, 07:56:40 AM hmm i still need to make more renders of this mandelbrot iteration!
twinbee as i've mentioned before, the site is really well done ;D Title: Re: Best of the best 3D fractals over the web Post by: lycium on March 27, 2008, 11:59:40 AM i've just kicked off a new 3d mandelbrot render, it's going to take a day or two before it's done but it should be worth the wait O0
that'll be my first entry in the new fractalforums self-programmed-renderer competition, since trifox complained about me not showing my cards early on :P Title: Re: Best of the best 3D fractals over the web Post by: cKleinhuis on March 27, 2008, 02:07:26 PM :police: :police: :police:
hehe, i should have included a max render time in the compo :D Title: Re: Best of the best 3D fractals over the web Post by: lycium on March 27, 2008, 02:49:10 PM believe me, if i could avoid rendering it for so long i would :/ unfortunately it's not cheap to do completely unbiased high resolution rendering of a crisp 3d fractal. if you're thinking about changing the submission rules, perhaps more fair than limiting the render time would be to require a working program that renders it... however, if the rules are too stressful, few people will enter...
anyway, my other entries should be much much faster to render. Title: Re: Best of the best 3D fractals over the web Post by: cKleinhuis on March 27, 2008, 03:09:24 PM dont worry, it was just a joke ... :smooth: Title: Re: Best of the best 3D fractals over the web Post by: lycium on March 27, 2008, 03:11:45 PM well, it's a fair concern considering i'm going to be rendering it with ~20ghz over much of the weekend...
but i'm glad there is no discrimination against high powered rendering :evil1: Title: Re: Best of the best 3D fractals over the web Post by: cKleinhuis on March 27, 2008, 03:20:37 PM no it is appreciated, there is an extra information field in the gallery - time taken - where you can leave anote about rendering time

I'm actually quite impressed how much 3D printing has advanced over the past few years. Last time I remember, I saw monochrome blob like structures taking days to build, rather than 450^3 cubes per inch cube colour models taking hours. Thanks both for the comments - *really* can't wait to see the new render/s! :D Title: Re: Best of the best 3D fractals over the web Post by: GFWorld on March 28, 2008, 05:05:23 PM I just had a visit at your sites - and, I am sure I will come back again :)
All my compliments - just great ! Margit Title: Re: Best of the best 3D fractals over the web Post by: twinbee on March 29, 2008, 11:41:02 AM Thanks! I took a peek at your own site too. I'll give my faves (roughly with best at top):
http://www.graphicandfractalworld.com/Fr5/FeSt8.html Really love the coloring, overall shape, and jellyfish-like translucency in this - I think it may be your best one! Do you have a higher res? These 3 also come very close: http://www.graphicandfractalworld.com/Mb1/mb4.html http://www.graphicandfractalworld.com/Fr1/fe126.html http://www.graphicandfractalworld.com/Fr1/fe116.html These aren't as good as the above, but still really nice: http://www.graphicandfractalworld.com/Fr1/fe100.html http://www.graphicandfractalworld.com/UF/7.html http://www.graphicandfractalworld.com/UF/120.htm http://www.graphicandfractalworld.com/Fr1/fe162.html http://www.graphicandfractalworld.com/Fr1/fe181.html http://www.graphicandfractalworld.com/Mut/Mut23.htm Title: Re: Best of the best 3D fractals over the web Post by: titia on April 02, 2008, 01:40:38 PM WOW....I'm impressed !
...are you familiar with the 3d work of Bathsheba ? http://virtualmathmuseum.org/mathart/ArtGalleryBathsheba/Bathshebaindex.html Title: Re: Best of the best 3D fractals over the web Post by: twinbee on April 07, 2008, 12:16:38 AM Thanks!
Yeah, I think I've seen some of his work before. Not bad, though they're a little too much like 'shapes' - more fractalness would be nice :) Btw, I couldn't resist having a glance at your gallery. So far I love this (http://www.wack.ch/titia/Album/Favorites/photos/photo2.html) and especially Inner World (http://www.wack.ch/titia/Album/Favorites/photos/photo4.html), oh and also some pics from your "feelings" series (25 (http://www.wack.ch/titia/Album/Feelings/photos/photo25.html), 23 (http://www.wack.ch/titia/Album/Feelings/photos/photo23.html), 4 (http://www.wack.ch/titia/Album/Feelings/photos/photo4.html), 3 (http://www.wack.ch/titia/Album/Feelings/photos/photo3.html), 11 (http://www.wack.ch/titia/Album/Feelings/photos/photo11.html)). Pic 23 is like a really weird cool landscape. Honestly, all this minimalist "postmodern art" you see everywhere in restaurants etc., made of squiggly lines, or super-basic gradients has NOTHING on stuff like yours, GFWorld and others here.
