Title: wrapping fractals with images
Post by: teamfresh on January 19, 2008, 08:54:55 PM
forgive me if someone has answered this but i just was wondering....

I use ultafractal to create my images and i wondered if anyone knows of a way to create a fractal using another image/photo with ultafractal (or any other software for that matter!) one example i found is this one of a mandelbrot set made out of tubs of smarties!!!!! any help would be invaluable thanks guys.

I'm not sure abot the exact effect you posted in that picture, but some fun variations can be made with Mutatorkammer ( http://www.fractalmovies.com )

Here's the animation for that image:

http://s106.photobucket.com/albums/m278/sockratease/?action=view&current=brollybrot2.flv

And of course Chaos Pro made this animation:

(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m278/sockratease/th_yup.jpg) (http://s106.photobucket.com/albums/m278/sockratease/?action=view&current=yup.flv)

Sensing a theme in my work?

I'm always looking for such programs too, so if anyone knows more, Post!

from the continuous escape time potential (together with the angle of the last iteration) you get a polar mapping (phi, theta), which gets interpreted as (u,v) in a texture map. that specific image you posted looks like it's comprised of two layers, a base (spiral) and then the alpha-textured mandelbrot over it.

Hi, there are two utilities for bringing images into Ultrafractal:

"Bring it in" by Mark Hammond:
http://www.beautifulandes.com/bringitin.html (http://www.beautifulandes.com/bringitin.html)

"Sprite" by Mark Townsend
http://www.fractaldimentia.com/sprite/index.html (http://www.fractaldimentia.com/sprite/index.html)

Note that both programs import the images as formulas which can get very large so it's best to start with small images.
Also a tip to allowing import of larger images is to convert the image to less colours first (e.g. 256 or less) then back to full-colour mode before trying to import it into UF.

Using images as textures for traps gives you even more flexibility - plus you don't need to worry about image seams that can cause ugly discontinuity while tiling:

Fun Stuff!

I'm having difficulty making either of the above programs work with Chaos Pro.  Chaos Pro can work with Ultra Fractal files.

I think it has to do with unfamiliarity with Ultra Fractal stuffs.

I got a ucl file, and imported it to Chaos Pro, but it doesn't work!

I'll keep trying and see if I can formulate a proper question to help me with this...

Meanwhile, if anyone has made this work, please let me know - just for encouragement!

EDIT:

Nevermind...

This is just going to lead to more of my own...  unique brand of Fractal Art.

Thanks!

Here's another animation that uses bitmap textures with fractals.

And for completeness, here's an example of using images in flame fractals (IFS):

How did you do this. Please share your workflow.

Just to add to anyone who doesn't know - Ultra Fractal 5 has the facility to import images for use in fractals built-in.

There are quite a few programs that have had this feature for many years.  Here are a few others that did not get mentioned:

  •  SpangFract for the MAC

  •  wmPhoto for Windows

  •  the GIMP with plugins

I even have the Visual Basic code to do this if anybody is interested (though it is now a bit old and dated from when I last played with it).

I love this! I never knew you could put pictures into flames!

You can, but it's difficult. (not really, you just need to now how it works) I suggest you to read the following tutorial on how to use images in Apophysis 2.04 JF:

Get the software here:

http://fav.me/d29frz2 this was done in Paint.Net
http://119-raymond.deviantart.com/art/Link-is-multiplying-141791189 this one was done in GIMP

you all probably know of these though...

A couple of years back I used the math-map plugin  (  http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/schani/mathmap/  (http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/schani/mathmap/)  ) for creating fractals and found it quite enjoyable. It's still in active development and lots has improved since then but I've been doing other things since. I used it to do texture mapping onto the m-set, and attempted warpings/manipulations of images using the m-set.
