Was just browsing the list of recent posts and saw the cool fractal animations.  Put me in mind of a cute one I saw on youtube (apologies if it's already been mentioned somewhere).

I like the music.  Warning:  There's a bit of coarse commentary on top of the animation - dear, dear, teenagers.

Oh yes.  I'm an oldie fractalist.  Saw my first one in '82, but I'm sure there's lots of people/dinosaurs here who predate me.

i was pretty surprised to see that demo posted here! the demoscene (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demoscene), where i learnt most of my programming skills, is usually quite underground. it's important to note that it's not really a video originally, but rather a non-interactive program which runs in realtime on your computer. there have been some really excellent demos featuring fractals in recent years :)

Hi Thomas, I know what you mean about the demoscene being rather underground.  I only stumbled upon it because of some demos included with an Advanced Gravis soundcard I bought years ago. 

Some of today's demos require highend hardware so it's useful if they are on youtube, although I'm sure they lose much in picture quality. 

I try and keep an eye out for Assembly and other "Party Places".  The youngsters come up with all kinds of interesting ideas for art and music.  Once I found a piece of music I liked a lot, and a few years later, found another piece, and a few years after that found that they were actually by the same person.  One was released under his scene alias, the other under his real name. 

Many of the Finnish demo groups get broken up when the members are conscripted into the army!   ;D

yeah the demoscene strongly supported the GUS back in the day! i never had one, so i would know ;)


indeed; one of the most spectacular demos i've seen recently (http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=24487) really nails my very high end card, but then one gets absolutely amazing graphics at high definition resolution (1920x1200).


assembly has become really commercial and many feel that it's lost its scene spirit. these days the real party is breakpoint (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakpoint_(demo_party)).

regarding music, my favourite music is also produced by demoscene folk, in particular by brothomstates / lassi nikko (finland is an amazing place full of amazing people). if you like demoscene music, and have a broad appreciation, check out the many-cd demovibes compilation: http://www.demovibes.org/


that's always been the case and will continue to be the case of course ;) it's surprising what a technical and musical powerhouse finland seems to be; finland is winland!

Thanks for the links.  I'd come across a video of Deities, but it definitely wasn't at 1920x1200.  Must be really incredible at that resolution.  The other links were new to me.  The demovibes collections look to be a good timesaver.  Will check out their selections and the brothomstates, perhaps sometime over the Christmas hols. 

I've occasionally wondered how it is that the Finns are so sharp and the only thing I can think of is that they probably have a very good education system. 

Sorry I don't have any links to offer in return, most of the stuff I have is bits and pieces of oldskool picked up from various places over the years.  A recent gem was "exterminator" by La Nause (I think it was at scene.org).  This piece lived up to being nauseous but in an amusing way.  If I was working in a software house where everybody was blaring music, this would be my choice to drive people nuts.   ;D

i really doubt you'd like brothomstates (formerly known in the demoscene as dune, from the demogroup orange), he usually employs extremely complex drum sequencing; a song of his you miiight like, which always gives me a strong sense of nostalgia, is "wekilldaenemy" - i have it online here: http://www.fractographer.com/propaganda/brothomstates%20-%20wekilldaenemy.mp3 (there are two other, more representative, tunes of his in that folder)

it's from the (absolutely incredible) demo by katastro.fi called codename chinadoll (http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=119).

Liked the brothomstates fine.  Tried to run the demo, got the video but no audio (it started but cut out after 10 seconds for some reason) so good thing you had the .mp3s  :) 

About the only demo music I can offer is some oldskool mods from '92-'95.  I've zipped them up and you may need to install a mod player (I use the ModPlug Player) if interested.   ;)
