Title: Fruitless overnight renders due to Windows Update
Post by: Madman on June 30, 2011, 07:47:46 PM
This morning I'd completely had it when Bill G. decided for the umpteenth time it was time to reboot my computer again at night. And it wasn't even Tuesday! 6 hours of preview rendering for a movie I'm working on down the drain!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if you have ever experienced this and have found a remedy for Windows 7 Home Edition. I just followed the advice in answer #6 in this thread: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-windows_update/i-want-to-turn-off-the-automatic-restart-for/88191194-d3e7-428d-a2a5-89e427756ccc (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-windows_update/i-want-to-turn-off-the-automatic-restart-for/88191194-d3e7-428d-a2a5-89e427756ccc) and since I'm still able to use my computer after I rebooted, I guess I haven't made any serious typo's in the registry key ;D

I'll have to wait until the next windows update to see if it made a change, but I didn't want to keep you from it. Maybe it's a nice tip for others, unless I'm the only one on these forums who's stupid enough to have his work regularly destroyed by Billy G...

Has anyone on the forums had any experience with this tweak?

Hmm, I guess this means it doesn't work...

Easy answer to that crap is to turn off auto updating.

Set it to alert you when updates are available and you do it manually.

Or better yet, if you are not at the computer while it's rendering, disconnect from the internet.  It's a waste of electricity and having open ports with no activity for extended periods of time is just inviting hackers in to your system.

I agree totally with Sockratease,

I NEVER allow auto updates (unless there's something I don't know about going on).

Switch it off and disconnect from the net.

It would certainly make me a madman (!)

Yeah, well, of course Sock & Kam, you're both absolutely right. And there was a time when I cared enough to seal my PC from the big bad world as much as possible. But... I'm getting older. Or lazier. Both are true I guess ;D. So I want to have that security downloads to happen automatically. But I want to decide myself when to reboot!!! And not have Billy G decide what's "best" for me...

Well, it actually seems to work. I was a happy camper this morning, when I found out that a) my render was finished and b) my computer was updated but not restarted! There's only a little dialog box reminding you that you should restart your computer. Well, I can live with that
