Congratulations to all winners! Your work is really impressive. However, I also want to greet all other participants - don't be sad, art cannot be compared, and be assured that your work is also admired by us. And in this respect, I consider everyone of us is a winner - we had the unique privilege to see artworks encapsulating a beauty that can never be expressed by words.

I also want to thank to the organizers - the number of submissions increases year-by-year and this makes managing the contest harder! Anyway, IMHO, this is not just a fractal contest, but THE fractal contest.

Congrats winners
.
I am Going with the previous comments , well deserved.
Have to admit that I did not vote for the animation section due to a more than two weeks lack of internet connection and time.
My excuses for that.

THE fractal contest seemed a bit strange to me , looking at some entries of  multiple artist made me wonder why these images are submitted instead of the beauties they have shown before.

I Can`t argue about taste of course.

Congratulations to all the winners! very well deserved... and the results were almost what I expected!
(see my comments on "The Fractal Wasp Troll"... I told you Johan!  )

I was sure also that bib's video should be in the podium. Congrats, bib!
BTW, I'm surprised that my video is on #12 place! Being a very short 2D, not HD video, I didn't expect that! Thanks to all who voted it!

Regarding 2D, Ross Hilbert, what can I say, his works are awesome... he mantains an unique style but the quality is always excelent.
I expected a bit more on my images, but 12 & 13 places are not bad at all. I know I must work better on coloring. That's because I focus so much on formulas and finding new things, and not much on the "art" part of this :)

Congratulations again to all participants, and off course, congratulations to Christian for the contest's organization, very good work!

Tabasco, is very common that artist's favorites does not match with the favorites of their public. It happens all the time ;)

I realise that very well Kali.
Happened to me several times that an image I like a lot myself was not even noticed.
That`s why I can`t argue about taste.

Still wondering though and prolly need to ask the artists in person for a motivation of their choice.
I am no mathemagician like a lot of people around here so maybe it`s like your example of a focus on the formula inovation.

The Images that made me wonder can be some Magical Math Miracle without being recognised by me ;-)

I think the results may have been biased in favor of the items higher up (later-submitted) on the gallery pages. Not everyone who votes goes through them all and votes, and the rest may tend to vote only for the items near the top of the page. Bearing this out, the lower-rated items also tend to have fewer votes and a lower page position, statistically speaking. If the number of votes, and not just the average of the votes submitted, boosts the score, that would do it.

In that case, next year perhaps the gallery pages should be "shuffled" for each distinct IP used to view the gallery pages, so the vote-only-for-the-first-few-items or only for the ones "above the fold" that catch one's eye types will each be biased toward a different subset of the images.

*PHEW*
Been of the net for a few days and came back to this.

I cant tell you how deeply honored I am to receive this kind of appreciation on this very special forum... the place where it all started. It means more to me than anything else, this mug is the greatest award I can imagine.
I came here just after the Mandelbulb hype had started and have since then been lucky to be able to follow all efforts in the search for the Grail. This place is so packed of helpful and talented people.

The forum awoke my slumbering fascination for fractals, I did some Low-fi mandelbrots in the mid eighties…

I cannot mention all of you I want to thank, but you know who you are! ;)
Instead I thank you all this way… One image says more than a thousand words, and here are three!

Thank you Mathematicians:

Thank you Programmers:

And thank you all my fellow Artists:

And thank you for all your nice comments, and to Christian for all his efforts of running the forum and organizing the "contest".

And congrats to bib and Ross! Great pieces, as always!

 :toast:

Regards
Johan

the last 2 weeks the order was reversed, so that the oldest entries where the first, only the middle entries where at the same place ;)
but i think we had this year enough cloaking, a random function would be great and i try to get it within a year ;)

My precious mug dreams, dashed to pieces.

Oh well, there's always next year. Hanuman is one of my personal favorites and I certainly think it deserved higher than a 3.00, but I guess I can't really be an objective judge. Here's the high resolution (http://noeyedsquareguy.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d3hgaib) if anyone wants to check it out.

Congrats of course to all the winners. Fractal Wasp Troll was a great submission and Kraftwerk is one of the main reasons I started rendering fractals to begin with, so I'll gladly take the loss to him.

i'm proud to be a part of this inspiring and allways helpful comunity!

I am humbled by the other entries and I am continuously inspired by this fantastic group of fractal enthusiasts.

Congrats to bib and Johan. And if, as they say, envy is the sincerest form of flattery, consider yourselves sincerely flattered.

Thanks to Christian for organizing this event, donating the prizes, and administering this wonderful site (and for having a 2D category!!!)

I will bask in my glory whenever I look proudly at my mug.

Thanks to all,
Ross

 :wtf:

This is my review of the 2d fractals:

1st Place
"Hikers Beware", Fractal Ken
Very arty, you are the man! Overall winner, best in 2d fractals for my pleasure.

2nd Place
"Royal Pillow", juliomac
One of my favourites, very fancy but minimalistic, good job!

3rd Place
"Julia flowers", Fractist
beautiful, you can earn money with those images :)

4th Place
"Vampire's Dream", Ilionstar
Zoom in mf! You probably lost the third or second place. I have to check this formula out :)

5th Place
"Carnevale di Arlecchino", DarkBeam
Arty, nice wall picture, good work

last but not least:

"20110401-1", s31415
Can i have a shirt with such clothes!? Nice patterns

"Blackwater Buds", MTE
"Tree of Life", MTE
"Sea Anemones", MTE
intresting drawing method but base formula is too boring for me - good work anyway

"Moonlight Over the Lotus Pond", Fractist
good work, sweet

"The Imminent Assault on a Four Leaf Clover by the Tentacles of Hell", Madman
cool

"Hibiscus", The Rev
wonderful classic

"Games of Chance", Fractal Ken
too much detail for my pleasure, nice formula

"Femtobrot", Pauldelbrot
A royal mandelbrot, nice colors, good work

"FractMask", nataraja
funny :)

"Scenic Ascent", Fractal Ken
this one makes me dizzy, this is too much hard core for me ;) but good work, again

"1st. Interactive Fractal", Tabasco Raremaster
Philosophical stuff, good image for fractal addicted ;)

"Variations VI", _db_
Arty, but to much recurrence for my pleasure

Missing Fractals of Kali here, he deserved 2nd place in my opinion, he had done good job on exploring new nice fractals!

I missed to post my own contribution, im still polish up my own rendering app and still looking for "my own really nice and unique" fractal variation. Maybe next time :)

@ Johan ; Knowing how much you needed this new mug because you are tired of drinking warm instead of hot coffee to avoid your hands being burned again,it`s fair enough we can expect some work even more amazing out of your , free , hands next year and I bet that both Christian and Margit do not mind at all that your entry was not some 3.3 Gigazillionmegaterraflops sized image because that takes a swimmingpool to print it on ;-)

Thanks yv3 , I hope you had a good laugh about it too.

Since white contains all "the colors of infinity" , the interactive fractal contains almost every existing image ánd every one of those that still has to be created.  :D

Hey, many thanks!

"Kaliset" formula and derived came out just after the submitting period ended :)

I think the results are fair if we count only the visual artistic aspect of the images, wich is just right because is indeed a fractal art contest.
Here the visual "awesomeness factor" of the image has the votes, and there are a lot of artists here who really knows how to make beatiful pieces of amazing art, not only counting the "fractal" aspect, but coloring, lighting, angle and scene selection, and general mastering of the tools used.

I was thinking a time ago if such thing as a "researchers competition" or maybe a "formula competition" can be made... also the best software releases of the year could be awarded. (Even when I think Mandelbulb3D and Mandelbulber will be always on the first places :))
But it's difficult because this needs a qualified jury, cause not everybody is able to vote who was the best "fractal researcher" of the year, or the best formula or innovation discovered. The benefit of this is to give more recognition to who made most of the amazing images of the fractal art competition possible: researchers & programmers... and also encouraging more people to work on this. I don't know if it could be possible to made here, I talked with Christian about this once but I understand he's already busy and making a good effort running this forum and current competitions, so I don't know, I just wanted to share this idea I have.

last  year it was traffassel who got the fractal nobel prize 2010 :D

I know about traffasel and his wonderful work, and the discovery of "inside renderings" that added a new perspective to 3D fractals, specially to the box... also he use his own software Gestaltlupe, something that I use all the time, mainly for trying new ideas and researching because you can write your own formulas with it.

But...

Wasn't Tglad's Mandelbox came out on early 2010? I wan't here at that time, just asking. Also he did a very nice work on fractal classification.

Knighty's KIFS are very remarkable too...

As I said before, is something really difficult to judge!

But if you ask me... 1. Tglad - 2. Trafassel - 3. Knighty  :D

It would be a great idea to have a "Best formula of the year" contest... That would work, wouldn't it?

@Tabasco: I know you told me... And yes, I was in urgent need for a mug... actually only a Fractal WASP TROLL mug would do... I had arranged to buy one from myself on DA because I really didn't believe I would win, there were so many great submissions this year. :) I'll make a 3.3 GigPix version as soon as Jesse makes the "tiling render" function in MB3D.

And thank you GFWorld for sponsoring the preccccious prizes!

@Ross: Thank you for your nice words, and for your beautiful 2D:s!

@Fitz: Do not give up, I know how you feel, I was feeling like you last year, your Hanuman is great...
And remember it is not "the best" image that wins, it is just the one that gets most votes...

@Lenord: I agree, this place is the place to be, so much inspiring renders and ideas...

@Madman: Thanks, so do yours!  :dink:

@LMarkoya: Thanks a lot my friend. Glad you like it!

@LhoghoNurbs and Transdimensional: Well spoken!

@Kali: I know you told me... I didn't believe you though... Thanks!!!

I have been so busy this year between my regular job, my freelance work, and Wedding Preparations  (http://www.sockrateaze.com/carrararama/Smileys/default/smile13.gif)

I barely had a chance to participate this year and am shocked that my stupid video made the top 10!  I wish I had time to vote properly, but I couldn't see everything in one good sitting, so I wasn't as active as I could have been otherwise.

Congratulations to the winners and to all entries!  Some great stuff this year.

I think we should have informal "Challenges" once a month like happens in a lot of 3D Art Forums.  No prizes or anything, just a random theme and a timeframe.

They're fun and sometimes you learn stuff because the theme often forces you to try new things.  Fractal themes might include stuff like Architectural, Tree - Like, Faces, Humor, Lissa (or - if you must - other image work in orbit traps), or even just a specific color schemes, specific software  (problematic due to operating system differences and if a program is free or not).  Stuff like that.

But I digress...

I'll suggest that in the appropriate place if there's interest.

Meanwhile, just wait for next year's contest!  I'll be Ready next time   :nastyteeth:

so, thanks to margit as well from here

and no, i got your messy bib, but i thought the sponsoring is well suited for such "tiny" prizes as cups with images ;)
i would love to have some reasonable holographic printing or stuff to offer in store, but i didnt felt like intervening too
much in that and i would just get busy with too much sponsors, perhaps i should make a special sponsoring deposit
on paypal, so that anyone who feels like it can donate money to the forums, and after a year this could be used
for the prizes of next year ;)

@sock
feel free to organize such topics monthly/quarterly problem is to make up the gallery section for it ;)
or do it by keywordings, this way only a thread with reference to the corresponding images would
be great, if you like i can make boards for such things...like

Thank you very much Margit!

to bad the only printer for this is a company in taiwan which as many as 2.0000 as minimum amount ;)

Dunno how much frames the anim has but 2.000 mugs x 5 frames might do the trick

Or use my entry for the 2d section. The Bib has enough imagination left to see the animimation.

The MUG has arrived!

Here it is with some of its friends... My 3D printed mandelbulbs and my winning image for the 'Mandelbrot Tribute Contest' @ DA in the background.

It has been a long wait, but it was worth it!
The MUG, the precious MUG arrived last week.
Thank you Christian, thank you GFWorld for sponsoring the prizes, thank you Jesse, Luca and all you mathematic geniouses!
And thank you voters!

I love this place, and I am deeply honored!

My Mug has arrived and it looks great!

Thanks again to everyone involved with the contest, with special thanks to Christian and Margit :-)

I will put it in a place of honor among my other treasures.

Sincerely,

Ross Hilbert
