Title: Mandelbulb 3D (problem with M3I files and scale)
Post by: madaussie on May 25, 2011, 09:29:50 AM
Hi all,

I have been playing around with the program now for a few months and recently have been rendering some promising images at 4962 by 3507 pixels (A3 @300 dpi).  You can guess the number of hours involved for each render, but it is considerable.  However, much to my dismay, when I use the scale to show the complete image on my monitor, I find that the saved M3I file only saves the scaled image.  If I have not saved the image independently then I must rerender.  Is this a glich in the program or designed in on purpose.

Please help me either way.

Hi madaussie,

That sounds weird. From my experience if I save a m3i in Scale 1:3, I can reopen it and revert back to scale 1:1, which is logical because scale 1:3 needs the full pixel information to do the antialias filtering.

Cheers

Hi madaussie,

the m3i file saves always the internal buffer that is 1:1, so a downscaling can't be happen while saving!

I have only one explanation yet: the file was not saved at all and you got only a previous calculated little render.
Why so, i dunno, did you forgot to save at all, or does an error occured on saving???

Because this is the second report, first here http://www.fractalforums.com/index.php?topic=7286.msg32332#msg32332 (http://www.fractalforums.com/index.php?topic=7286.msg32332#msg32332),
i must have a closer look at the saving code...

Try saving the image as a bmp file and you will see what I mean.  I like to look at the image uncropped if it is larger than my monitor so I often have to use the 1:2 or 1:3 scale to view them.  If I then save the scaled image its dimensions will match that of the scaled image when opened in Photoshop, etc.  It is more of an inconvience than a serious problem, however.

Whay you say is true; when you save the image scaled down, you'll have a scaled and even anti-aliased picture. That has nothing to do with the M3I file. If you open the M3I (even when you have saved it with the button 1:3 or 1:2 pushed) you can push the scale 1:1 button and if you save a picture then, either jpg or bmp, you'll have the full scale image.
