Title: Point cloud and voxels system - real time unlimited detail
Post by: o0megaZer0o on March 01, 2011, 06:18:01 PM
This new algorithm is suppose to make unlimited amounts of detail possible to be rendered within the space of your screen real-time. The software uses point cloud and voxels as electronic "atoms" to create your surface topology rather than relying on polygonal faces. I hope that this new system will not only be implemented into video games, and graphics cards, but into 3d fractal programs as well so we can see some real-time 3D fractal rendering real soon!

This has been making the rounds among rendering experts for a while. As of yet, it is still unclear if this is real or a hoax. Voxel based rendering algorithms are getting a lot more attention lately, and several impressive demos exist in a form tangible enough to be solid proofs of concept.

However, all of these existing attempts have limitations of one sort or another, and the jury on this one is still out. Remember, "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from a rigged demo." :)

Fascinating subject! It actually parallels, if you like, the application of 3D fractals based on 2D fractals. Its all in the math.  :)
I have no doubt we will see more progress soon.

true
all my friends are skeptical, but I'm hoping for the best (fingers crossed for next year)
