Title: Some of my efforts
Post by: Fade on May 02, 2007, 11:45:57 AM
This is my most recent creation. I'm using a cropped version of this as the banner for my website.

This is a photoshop job that I knocked up as an album cover for www.irishunsigned.com

One more image...this is a draft of a fractal image I plan to use as a single sleeve for my bands song Setting Flames.

The song can be found here http://www.stbomb.com/Floating%20Point%20-%20Setting%20Flames.mp3 (http://www.stbomb.com/Floating%20Point%20-%20Setting%20Flames.mp3)

I'm using a program called fractal explorer. I was wondering if somebody could recommend something better?

Thanks

As to which fractal generating program is better than another, it all depends on what you are wanting to create and do with it.  Many have something unique about them that can not be found in other applications.  And then there are those people that will say only one particular program is the only one to use, but be wary of such claims, these people may be prejudice.    ;)

You may wish to try going here and seeing if there is something that might interest you:

Cool thanks for the link.  :D

I actually quite like FE, I just wasn't sure if there was a more powerfull app that the members of this forum were familiar with.

What do you mean by Powerful?

What are you trying to do?

Some are more powerful than others for Animation, but I can't think of anyplace else where the term "powerful" applies consistently to many programs.

I have 3 favorite Fractal Generators to suggest.

Chaos Pro  (http://www.chaospro.de), Chaoscope (http://www.chaoscope.org), and the Latest Addition - Mutatorkammer (http://www.fractalmovies.com)! (Mutatorkammer is made by a member here!)  Endlos looks Great, and is made by a member here too, but I have troubles with it's Java stuff.  My computer has issues and needs to have it's operating system re-installed...  But I digress...

Check the Image Thread for examples of stuffs I made with each (and sometimes more than one!) (Mutatorkammer can work with images, so I plugged in some Fractal Images made with Chaoscope and got some wonderful results!).

Have Fun!

Well I'm not 100% certain that FE is making good use of my systems processor (Core 2 Duo). I don't know if it is capable of using both cores. The reason I think this is that it seem to be performing (Render Time) about the same as it did on my P4 system.
Using the task manager to monitor cpu usage during rendering, I notice that 1 core gets 100% while the other hovers around 19%

I never worry about that stuff!

I am primarily concerned with finished images, not how efficiently they are rendered.

Chaoscope has taken 8 hours to render a single image for me sometimes...  But I LOVE the results, so I let it run while I sleep!

I suppose the plus side is that there are cycles free for other applications like web browsing and such :P

At the risk of Paul calling me "bias" I'd recommend Ultrafractal, though it's commercial software rather than freeware.
ChaosPro does a lot of what Ultrafractal does and is pretty much compatible and also free but I find Ultrafractal's interface much easier to use and Ultrafractal is more stable.
With respect to making full use of processor/s UF is eminently configurable in that regard.

The problem is, that the majority of software (fractal generators or otherwise) available in the world, have not been sufficiently upgraded to take advantage of multiple core processors.

There are only a handful of fractal generators that meet this one criteria.  Hopefully more will eventually be upgraded to use MCP's.

As to being "powerful", there are several fractal applications that excel in particular areas.  Some of those have already been mentioned.  A few others could be mentioned, but it would depend on what type of fractals you are attempting to create.    :)
