Title: will work for fractals
Post by: fractaljunkie on February 17, 2011, 04:26:55 PM
Heyo, glad I found this spot. Can't believe it took me so long to find it. Blowin' my mind with the contests and rotating banners, wow. Very similar to my friends' art site http://www.studioeight.tv/phpbb but that's a little of all the arts. Feel like I found the mothership, Thanks for letting me join

I make fractals using all kinds of popular and obscure fractal software, make fractal music, have some fractal resource sites in the works that I'm building, have done high definition fractal wraparound canvas prints for people that wanted them, looking to help bring fractals more into the mainstream. Love the math behind it all, sometimes wish I was a fractal just floating along, existing in fractional dimensions where no one else could see.

Hi there!

I love the thought of fractal music.  I'm a musician with a range of vst instruments but have never come across anything that makes fractal music although I do have a synth called Crystal that uses a breeding method to randomise sounds.  You choose a father and a mother and a mutation rate and then breed.  I could never have contrived some of those sounds.  Pleased to meet you anyway.

Welcome, fractaljunkie!

How do you make fractal music? Do you use special software?

Regards,
Ken

Hello and welcome!

I too am intrigued by how fractal music is made - I know Visions of Chaos can sort of do it - but I suspect there is a better way.

Feel free to post your work in the gallery here, and if you need a host for audio files, let me know.  I may be able to work something out   :elvis:

Wowow, so much warmth, thanks for making me feel welcome, gang.

Well, first, I should probably plug the FractalForum's "other" section for fractal music generators and parameter to MIDI/etc converters.. http://www.fractalforums.com/other-artforms/

There's also some great (some that don't work anymore or aren't found online anymore) lists of music generators and converters out there, a lot of this stuff is going to require some kind of older windows emulation or compatibility runner:

http://www.fractovia.org/art/fractal_generators/music01.shtml

There's also a pretty extensive list of fractal sites and programs hidden over at dmoz: http://www.dmoz.org/Science/Math/Chaos_and_Fractals/ lots of those sites also have more info on fractal music, fractal sound generators, fractal parameters to MIDI and etc

http://stason.org/TULARC/science-engineering/sci-fractals/34-What-are-sources-of-fractal-music.html

I also wrote some obsolete simple programs for QBASIC myself that would cross-reference the displayed Mandelbrot or Julia set with a string of notes, but it wasn't very appealing at all.

Looking to generate an up-to-date list with reviews of fractal sound programs and utilities, I'll post soon for you all if I get one done that's relatively comprehensive and current.

Here's some samplings of my own music, usually I start off with fractal tones and sounds generated by one or another program using parameters from a set, then distort it into a loop or even instrument. I usually layer the heck out of my songs, and have been known to throw in live instruments on top of everything. Really on a big chiptune and glitch kick these days, so please don't anticipate classic rock and roll or mellow ambience:

As you can see, it's pretty chaotic-sounding, but if you pay attention, even the song progression becomes self-similar.

Oh, thanks for the offer to host, I actually have my own hosting plan with ~30 websites for myself and clients, but thanks!! Actually, I spent some time a while back as a phpbb and smf techie so if I can help YOU then let me know!!

Thanks for the links!  I'll be checking some out over the weekend   :D

Kind offer!

The only thing I think we need for the forum, apart from a bigger database capacity from our host, is a "package" I've been meaning to post a request for over at the help forum there.

We get SOOOO many spambot accounts that it's a lot of work constantly banning them for joining just to put links in their signatures and profiles.

I want a way to prevent members from modifying their profiles at all until they make at least one post!   :siren:

Haven't found any way to do that with membergroups and permissions like I thought would be easy, but wasn't.

I suspect we can't be the only forum who would find such a measure useful, so if you have any tips in that regard - I would be grateful   O0

Cool. Hope your host is helpful, I'm sure they are.

Hmm, lemme peruse SMF for MODs out there, I know phpBB has both of those options standardized now but that doesn't really help. I can probably find something, don't mind helping install, either, or give layman instructions, whatever helps. Can zap bots as well, makes me feel like a space fighter.

 :alien:

Yeah sure I'll get back to you soon!

No problem, Fractal Ken! Loving the vibe here.. be sure and let me know if you have any links to share, too, trying to collect as many as possible
