Title: mandelbrot in polar coords, log scale from zoom video
Post by: makc on February 16, 2011, 02:26:45 AM
I've been messing with this not-so-exotic projection before (http://www.fractalforums.com/programming/real-time-mandelbrot-zoomer-to-1e-6-in-flash!); this time I am working on a script to do the opposite: extract such maps from zoom videos. Patient №1 (http://youtu.be/JIfzcoPT5mg) test output of 1st 89 seconds:

(http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/8343/output00.jpg) (http://img560.imageshack.us/i/output00.jpg/)

I will complete whole video eventually, but now I need to take a break :) Could be interesting to run non-fractal videos through this script when it's done.

Ok, I have converted it to one big-ass 1024x87952 image, which is more than jpeg file could hold, and WAY more than this forum gallery allows :) will have to shrink it down to 65535...

Who can access your original image files? No one (because you have a free account).

Ok, I finally could upload the image here (http://sites.google.com/site/e228logmap/). Now to interesting part, interactivity :)

this is amazing! It all makes sense now! - I have seen images of fractals like these before done by you and I loved them - this is so cool!!!!!

Love the picture!  Grabbed it a couple days ago, but my keyboard was dead and I don't particularly care for the virtual keyboard that comes with the computer - so I barely posted anything.  Got a new usb one now, so I'm back to my usual obnoxia;

Could be interesting to run non-fractal videos through this script when it's done.

I've got a short video clip (a few minutes) of Lissa taking a bubble bath leftover from her retired website I think I can get permission to give you if the idea sounds right.  It would surely make for an amusing image   :elvis:

There's no nudity and it should only offend the very most prudish of people, and we all know they don't count   :ugly:

@teamfresh, for those who are too lazy to scroll :D then, just think about it, were you to make that map in the 1st place, you would have your zoom video few months earlier, or alternatively, few orders deeper...

@Sockratease who's Lissa? any way, even if there was nudity, I would not complain. the thing is, as is, my script only handles scaling atm. I'd have to make some changes to allow for pan or rotation.

Lissa is the woman who keeps showing up in many of my fractal images (and coincidentally my Fiancee!).  I've been making images with her and fractals ever since before the Dawn of Creation.

She fractallizes surprisingly well.  I've been posting images like that for years.  Used to slip them in when she had a modeling website!

another guy (http://youtube.com/MultiPaulinator) asked to run this on his zoom vid "double the dose", so here goes 2nd ~1/5th of his zoom:

(http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/4601/out01h.jpg) (http://img132.imageshack.us/i/out01h.jpg/)

I have to say this projection makes it apparent how boring and repetitive zoom can be. At ~20% from the top you can see probably the only non-repeating feature, otherwise it's all tight bands of similar structures. Ok, I know, it's called fractal because of self-similarity, but wouldn't it be more interesting to explore diversity instead, and show different features at every zoom level? If I'm not mistaken, the above zoom by teamfresh was constructed to double amount of similar features at every X orders of magnitude; but just imagine what the image would look like if he (they?) would jump around boundary randomly instead.

can you give a description on how these maps work ? i know this was discussed before here, but can not really remember the exact procedure...

in the above images, x ~ φ and y ~ log r (scale doubles every 60 pixels for last imge, for example). there's wiki article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logarithmic_scale) for more info.

I'm still fine-tuning flash applet, it is very hard to make fast and continuous zoom so deep. I had to sacrifice linearity (i.e. image warps if you zoom too fast) but even then there are problems. But I'm pretty sure it can work.

here is what I got so far: http://wonderfl.net/c/mI6O/fullscreen

fast zoom-in kinda works almost as I intented it to, but zoom-out creates weird effect. Not sure if I like it, but I am going to keep it for now. maybe I will make another iteration with teamfresh image.

wow, way cool! I love those maps of the zooms!

nearly 4 years ago?? what happened?
any way to do this to a movie today?
