Title: Mandelbulber 0.98
Post by: Buddhi on February 13, 2011, 04:45:09 PM
Mandelbulber 0.98 - for Linux x86, Linux x64 and Win32

Open source program (GNU GPL) for rendering photo-realistic 3D fractals

Free download: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mandelbulber/

Website: http://sites.google.com/site/mandelbulber/

After a long time I have made new version. Not so much visible changes but many changes in source code.

New features in version 0.98:

- added preview for settings files in Load Settings dialog window
- improved quality of Depth of Field effect
- added FoldingIntPow2 formula
- improved calculation of raytracing steps. Added dynamic correction of estimated distance. Added possibility to switch between logaritmic and linear fuction for distance estimation (linear is much better for hybrid formulas).
- moved Image Scale combo into main Render Window
- added possibility to adjust fog visibility and focus point for Depth of Field effect using mouse pointer (added combo box for change function of mouse click)
- source code: cleaned up, refractioned, optimised (thanks to Ryan Hitchman)

Before first run please use install script

thank you for the latest version!

I was looking for a way to save a set of default Mandelbulber settings, which I would like to use before I load any Fractal Formula Type.
Thinking ahead, I was wondering if such a file could be saved into a Default Setting file under the pull down menu Fractal Formula Type
in a future version.

cheers!

Default fractal settings are stored in settings/default.fract file. So if you want to change defaults please overwrite this file with your prefered settings.

Nice.  The click to get the point of focus in the DOF effect is very, very nice.  Thanks again Buddhi for your continued refinement of this brilliant proggy.

Title: quality loss in v0.98
Post by: taurus on February 28, 2011, 12:08:50 PM
hello there,
i've encountered some serious problems with the rendering quality in v0.98. as far as i know it definitely occures to mandelboxes with a negative scale an plane rotation. i did not find a knob to fix these problems. to show the difference between 0.97 and 0.98 renderings i arranged two comparisons. they are not labeled but the worse one is each v0.98. the fract-files are linked below, so anyone can verify.

can anyone help to restore quality?

Hi

Thank you for detailed description of problem. Now I know what is exactly wrong. I have increased accuracy of calculation of normal vectors. In this type of fractal, the surface very rough, so with high accuracy of normal vectors there is visible every small detail on surface as a noise. I have to add some switch or edit field for setting accuracy of normal vectors calculation (for some fractal it have to be more accurate). I will do this during next weekend.
