Title: Hello from Paris !
Post by: AlphonseLavallee on February 12, 2011, 06:19:05 PM
Hello! I am an occasional fractal artist amateur living in Paris, France. I discovered the Mandelbulb on the site “Images des Mathématiques” (Jos Leys article in French (http://images.math.cnrs.fr/Mandelbulb.html)).

Even if I am more known on deviantArt for my anthropomorphic drawing, I recently tried to make panoramic representations of the Mandelbulb. Here is an example... (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/195389342/) Of course the rendering isn’t very aesthetic compared to what could be obtain with some software, yet the pleasure of writing his own code is priceless...  :dink:

I was also wondering if there is other people working on 360° panorama of the Mandelbulb?

Hello and Welcome!

I've been meaning to try some sort of panoramic render eventually so I can use it in my 3D work, but have not yet done so, or even tried to learn how to about it.

Maybe you can teach us how!

Welcome, bienvenue :)

I played with this idea a while ago: http://www.fractalforums.com/mandelbulb-renderings/test-panorama/

Sorry for the delayed reply!

@Sockratease: Thank you. It seems that panoramic version of the Mandelbulb aren't very common. I tryed different way, like coding my own program (http://alphonselavallee.deviantart.com/art/Source-program-198028772) (it isn't very optimized and only return a z-buffer) or using software developed by others (Mandelbulber, Autostitch). The best solution would probably be to integrate an equirectangular geometry in the Mandelbulber sources... (it is easier to say than to do, I know)

@bib: Merci. Your example is quite interesting. Did you already try to render a panorama on a full sphere (360° x 180°) ?

@Jameses:  Please, forgive my lack of tact... :embarrass:

for a panoramic experience it is possible to run the boxplorer program, http://www.mediafire.com/?tefc2n7izmm76mr

you need a very fast graphics card but the renders are pretty joli.

No, the program I use (Panorama maker) does not allow this.
