Title: 2010 is over, let 2011 begin!
Post by: cKleinhuis on December 30, 2010, 02:04:50 PM
as you might guess 2010 is over in a few hours, and a lot happened throughout the year, for first let us remember Benoît B. Mandelbrot who died late in this year!

i thought i will finish this year with some statistics,
concerning web site traffic, first of all, the forum stats:

Page Impressions on the stats page are counting each bot, but also are not disturbed by ad blocking,
http://www.fractalforums.com/index.php?action=stats

the year 2010 started with a solid 600.000 page impressions a month, and grew constantly to an average of 700.000 a month until end of the year,
this makes ~25.000 page impressions a day, calculating out the automatic bots you have to divide it by 3, which makes a solid 7.500 page impressions
a day.

at average there are now 70 registered users online every day!

coming to web server statistics, the following list is web-site overall traffic a month, it has grown from ~40Gig a month to now over 60gig a month:

month       megabytes
2010-12    62.273,3
2010-11    65.702,4
2010-10    69.618,0
2010-09    56.464,9
2010-08    48.725,1
2010-07    46.091,3
2010-06    46.011,3
2010-05    46.312,2
2010-04    44.395,2
2010-03    43.853,6
2010-02    38.422,9

i also let google analytics count everything on the page, and it told me that we had 212.760 real visits over the whole year, who produced 1.5mio page impressions, at average every visitor viewed 7,2 pages per visit
and the overall time spending on the page was at 7minutes per visit!

we also have a breakdown for country access rates, first number is yearly visits, second number is pages per visits per country and the last number is the average
time spend on the page, as a fact we are nearly covering the whole earth now with interested users, an image made by google analytics is showing that only a few places
in central africa and the poles are the only countries who have not yet visited the site...

top ten countries visits - pages/visit - duration -
1.

all in all it was a quite succesful year, because from mid of the year the page is producing exactly the amount of costs of webspace through ad impressions,
which is 30€ a month, i just can thank you for ad clicking, and please continue to do so ;)

one thing i have to mention is that finally the forums logo section in the gallery grew a lot, making the logos above the page more diversified, thank you for all contributors!

plans for 2011 are:

- fractalforums.com spring 2011 fractal art competition is held as usual, we still are in need of a sponsor for prices, if now sponsor is found who wants to provide special prizes the prizes will be coffe-cups with the winner images as usual

- i want to push merchandise for the forums a bit further, and i think i will take each month most succesfull image out of the gallery to create a nice fractal art calendar for 2012, if users provide their formulas for high quality rendering, or high resolution images

- update forum software to smf2.0

- update gallery ( 50$ costs )

- perhaps a new forums design ?

- sort out gallery smileys

forum quality has grown even further, and only one little flaming war occured in the forums, all in all the users where quite polite and helpful

also i have to thank the forum admin team, which is dealing with newly registered users, and sorting out spam bots, moderating and welcoming new users, which are ( in alphabetical order )

_db(inactive), bib(latest), David Makin(grandfractalfather), fractalwizz(inactive) lycium(producing software), NaheeEnterprises ( manages everything),  Sockratease (crazy and reliable)

and let us not forget to thank the stable forum software: SimpleMachinesForum
http://www.simplemachines.org/

so, let 2011 begin!  O0

clicking on banners without real interest is not desired, but sometimes the banners really show some information  O0

Agreed, and especially avoid abusing it by clicking many times in one day!  That can be viewed by the advertisers as abuse and get the ads pulled and revenue forfeited.

Click once per day maximum if you want to help, too much can actually hurt the effort.

But back to the subject at hand...

I don't celebrate the New Year until Perihelion!  That's the REAL New Year (to us Born Again Pagans, anyhow).  It's when Earth is closest to The Sun, and we start a New Orbit.  A New Year!

It's January 3rd this year - at 19:00 GMT  (where I am it's 2:00 PM EST).

I like using Perihelion because it's real, not arbitrary like the calendar.  Plus, it's the same time for everyone on the globe, using "Midnight" on Jan. 1st gives 24 "New Year's" moments and just confuses me...
