How does this work?  I was amazed at how it combined with the mandelbulb to create a torus, and I'd really like to know more about what it does, and how best to apply it for different types of effects.  I'd appreciate any thoughts, ideas or insights on the matter.  Thanks. :D

My understanding (I might be wrong, as so often!) is that it simply adds a constant vector to the current point at each iteration. Now I'm still missing the logical path these guys are having to create a torus from a bulb and a translation, any insight appreciated :)

Just knew that a julia at 0,0,0 makes a sphere and the translate was one of the few i could make any sense of...
a combination of experience and feeling  :)

Escape time fractals are not really intuitive for me, creating something you have in mind is hardly to realize with it.

OK, I did not notice you took a (0,0,0) julia as a starting point. Now that's clearer.

Yesterday I showed my fractals to my grandmother and she asked me: "Can you make a snake that looks like a real snake?"

That's the problem with fractal design. Even with a lot of experience (not me because it's been only 2 years since I do that "seriously"), I feel that there is too much trial and error instead of a deterministic "artistic" process. The case of the torus solved here is a counter example, but very simple.

So, can anyone do a snake that looks like a real snake? No photoshop please!
