Title: LiquidBrot Mandelbulb Post by: kon16ov on October 22, 2010, 12:04:05 PM Good morning,
I just wanted to share my newest anim. It was intended to be a lot more ambitious than it was, but I kept running into "weird" places that didn't render well and took a long time to not render well. What I did find was what looks for the world like a shallow pond that when passed through produces waves. Continuing through it, it continued to really look...liquidy for a bit. It really starts at about the 20s mark. Any thoughts on that? Generated in Mandelbulb3D and assembled in KDEnLive. There are some oddities towards the end, but I think that has more to do with KDEnLive and using a new version that seems to have some kinks...it's all good. :) The music is "Spiral Depression" by Forbidden as found on their "Twisted into Form" album. As always -- feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks! I never heard of KDEnLive, so I can't give much feedback on that. I may look into it though, I'm always seeking new video editors! I only have access to expensive ones at my job, otherwise I use VirtualDub, and Pinnacle Studio. Title: Re: LiquidBrot Mandelbulb Post by: kon16ov on October 26, 2010, 07:14:02 AM Yeah -- I had never really seen anything like that before... *sploosh*
As for KDEnLive -- yeah, it's v0.7.8, at this point so not there, yet, as far as some products out there. I have to admit being VERY spoiled by Adobe Premiere. I've used it since v2 or so and ... yeah, you get spoiled. :) Being on the linux side, I found this one and it does the job for the most part. There are quirks, here and there, but that's to be expected. Now, the current thing that has me grump is that once you save a project (of 300-600 still frames jammed into an anim), quit and reload, it routinely crashes or hangs until the second coming. I guess I need to go hang out on their forms for a little bit, too. :) I haven't tried LIVE, as mentioned in another thread. Suppose I should look into it a bit more. The interface was a little irritating to me, but should probably just look into it more. KDEnLive's interface is much more like Premiere. Title: Re: LiquidBrot Mandelbulb Post by: gussetCrimp on October 26, 2010, 03:41:25 PM It's a great video, with interesting camera path and rotations, and big differences in scale between the beginning and end. The pool is really cool-looking but it's no doubt a weird moire artifact of whatever coloring method your program uses.
Title: Re: LiquidBrot Mandelbulb Post by: kon16ov on October 26, 2010, 04:59:49 PM Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. When it comes to the anim process I tend to look at it as something that everyone's seen a million times and trying to figure out how to present it in a way that is new. Kind of like driving out to Yosemite and trying to photograph Big Dome or El Capitan without people saying, "Wow...that looks like something Ansel Adams would have done...only he would have done it better." because of how our minds allow us to see things based on how we've seen things and our natural bent towards comparing and contrasting things and not, necessarily, enjoying them for what they are. I LOVE large differences in scale, but I'm also finding I don't like zooming for the sake of zooming...I want to GO somewhere and SEE stuff and not just whiz through zoom after zoom. I see these anims more as guided-ish tours...not that I know where I'm going, mind you, but it's fun! ;)
And, yeah -- it HAS to be an artifact, but I'm having trouble replicating it. Kind of like in the video I'm getting ready to upload to YouTube, now. I have no idea how it did it, but it seems to color cycle throughout -- which is not something I tried to do or, more importantly, know how to do. Might be time to ask Jesse about that... Title: Re: LiquidBrot Mandelbulb Post by: Jesse on October 26, 2010, 05:32:55 PM I dunno exactly what causes the water effect, maybe you were already inside the bulb and the color cycling did it...
looked nice although :) The other common artifact is overstepping on thin slides, like the star structures... cant be avoided totally, you can decrease the "Raystep multiplier" what leads to longer render times. Anyhow a very nice movie from the good old mandelbulb. Title: Re: LiquidBrot Mandelbulb Post by: The Rev on October 26, 2010, 09:33:53 PM Really, really cool! I love the way the flight path takes in details, twisting and turning in surprising ways. I'm still figuring out how to get my flight paths the way I want them, so I find your video inspiring as well as beautiful to watch. Nice work!

I'm still figuring out what all the different settings do regarding anims. It's one thing in a still, but I'm noticing things start to pop up during the anims and think, "OK...um...how did THAT happen?!" So, I've started really looking at the settings. Unfortunately, I've started doing this AFTER the most recent rendering (which FINALLY processed on YouTube, so I can post it, since I have questions about it...), so, learning what does what might take a bit of doinking. ...and, yeah -- I put in 0.125 for Raystep Multiplier on one, today. That was truly pokey... |
