Title: Geometer's sketchpad
Post by: Lee Oliver on September 20, 2010, 09:42:24 PM
Some of you may or may not know about Geometer's sketchpad so I will introduce it here.  It is mostly used for general [euclidean] Geometry, but it can be applied to make simple fractal patterns.  It is how I started making fractals, and I still use it during my lunch break.

Here is a link to the main site:

Unfortunately it is not a freeware program so it does cost a pretty penny.  I myself only have access to it at school.  I will post a few of my images tomorrow because it doesn't save images as jpgs.  I will also post a little something I found recently. :whistle2:

I converted all of my images to jpgs today so here is a small sample:

I made many of these with a common initiator shape, which is the point of this post.  I call it the dragon box.  In stead of finding new initiators to construct different dragons, I just use this box, which should include most of the dragons' initiators.  I was wondering if this could be extended through three dimensions to create 3D dragon fractals, does anyone know any methods for doing such a thing?

This is a very rudimentary program for creating fractals, but it is fun to mess with. :)

P.S. Do you like my muffin fractal? :)

My favorite "hand drawn" fractal, and especially the one that brought me to this forum: http://www.fractalforums.com/meet-and-greet/have-you-seen-this-fractal/msg6070/#msg6070

But I wouldn't try to eat your spiky muffin! :)

It's toadstool!  :)

Wow, you really drew that by hand!  Yes as was said in the link to your picture, it is a Levy dragon.  All of the fractals in Geo Sketchpad have that hand-drawn quality to them.

In fact I really drew it by hand on a wall in a friends room 15 years ago, but it's been painted over. It was 1 meter big. I don't remember the number of iterations, maybe 7 or 8, so the final bits were really small, less than 0,5 cm. It took me maybe 20 hours or more. I was young and stupid, but I had found a method to draw it very easily, it was really automatic for me :)

Google Sketchup (http://sketchup.google.com/intl/en/training/videos/new_to_gsu.html) may be useful to you.

I think Bib was born out of fractal conception.  :D
I hope that wasn't offensive; I meant it as a compliment. :angel1:
