I used to hear them mumbling, but then I was prescribed some tablets and they went away....now I've stopped taking the tablets and they haven't come back (yet) :)

That would have been brilliant had it been possible, especially if I could have worked out definitively if it was just a mental defect or some form of paranormal communication :D
The problem was actually the fact that it was "mumbling" - exactly like hearing a TV or radio from too far away to tell what was being said - so I had no way of telling whether the voice/s were negative or positive or some of each.
My unfortunate habit of analysing and rethinking everything from first principles made this a bad situation for me especially as it was usually worst when trying to sleep.
I basically went through 1. Is there actually a TV or radio on somewhere ? answer NO. 2. Am I just going insane ? 3. Is it telepathy ? 4. Is it Aliens ? 5. Is it ghosts ? 6. Is any option 3 to 5 good ? 7. Is any option 3 to 5 bad ? 8. Is there any way to prove or rule out options 3 to 5 ? 9. Go back to 1.

The only remaining really odd "symptom" is an occaissional "tickle" in my left ear, this used to happen before I started the tablets and came back when I stopped taking them. Otherwise I just seem to be slightly more emotional than when I was taking the tablets.

Sorry. Should we say Asia/Pacific. To my knowledge, the 5 officiel continents do not include Australia.

David, I'm not a doctor but if you look online you may be surprised at the number of people with similar symptoms, so I'm sure its not 1 to 5. For a period I used to get this weird really loud BANG in my head just before going to sleep, then I stumbled upon this chat group where hundreds had reported in describing exactly the same symptoms and how they thought they must be going insane, its actually called 'exploding head syndrome'!!  It went away after a while... I think perhaps I had been working too hard and not giving myself a break.

Don't worry about it, I know it's a relatively common condition - specifically it's pschyzophrenia and in my case was brought on by too much weed combined with overwork and did reach the acute stage where I was "on another planet", clinically psychotic and suffering depression and paranoia too. When treated initially with chlorpromazine I asked the doctor was I on a high dose as it was making me very sleepy and lethargic - he said that I was on enough to put an elephant to sleep.
Fortunately my prescription was changed to risperidone and reduced to just 1mg a day, that worked far batter than the chlorpromazine and as I said I'm now even off the risperidone.
Because of my experiences I no longer believe that marijuana/cannabis should be classed as a safe drug, though I do still believe it's properties need investigating further to produce beneficial drugs (in particular for relief of acute/chronic pain).

That is a kind of funny, because if 1. answer is no, i would switch on a radio or something.

Just to add that the worst point was around 20 years ago during the Kuwait War (which I remember being on TV when I was in hospital).
It was finishing the conversion of "Supercars" (Magnetic Fields/Gremlin) from the Amiga to the Atari ST that did me in, fans of retro games will note that Shaun Southern did the conversion of Supercars 2 to the Atari ST himself (I even had a forward for doing this that I had to pay back).
After I recovered I went on to write "Crystal Dragon" (Magnetic Fields/Black Legend) for the Amiga and then to help with "Tower of Souls" (Parys Technografx) for the Amiga and then the PC and then various phones.
Since then I've been working with Parys Technografx mainly on mobile software.
This is why I say I've "only" been working with fractals since 1999 as that's when I first played with Fractint ;)

I had an Amiga when I was a teenager and it was one of my favourite car games, with Stunts :)

Stunts ? Hmmm - I guess you just mean being able to fire missiles and leave oil slicks etc. ? I've forgotten myself if that could be done on "Supercars" or if it was only Shaun's follow-up "Supercars 2", it's years since I've played any Amiga or ST games, the last one I played was Crystal Dragon on the WinUAE Amiga emulator when someone had asked a question about one of the puzzles :)

The best game ever (in its time) for car stunts IMHO was Carmageddon :)
Though my favourite "car" game on the Amiga was definitely Stunt Car Racer !

David I can see how there could be a couple of ways to interpret question.  IE: where are you coming from?  ASs in how did you get into doing fractal art?  Also a question for all of you since David brought up smoking pot..  Do you think that drugs help or hinder the process of making fractal art? 

For me, they hinder art in general.  I never get inspired when influenced.  I have been clean from hard drugs for 8+ years now.  The Green stuff always made me paranoid or sick.  Alcohol just makes me too tired to do anything.  Coffee makes me shake and then I am jumpy and my head spins.

But I have heard some feel new ideas come from being under some influence of something, but I feel it comes from allowing chances to influence your work, like John Cage did with his music.  I say allow accidents to happen.

I asked for a couple of reasons..A couple of weeks ago I had to go to the ER for pain.  When I was ready to try to do some fractals I could not concentrate or fuction properly.  Maybe it depends on the drug?  Also in the 70's all the great musicians said that drugs made their music better.  Couple cups of coffee  get me going/motivatrd in the morn. Never really tried anything else while trying to be creative. Same here with alcohol, get too tired.  I do however get very inspired here seeing the work of others.

Maybe inspiration can come from 'shrooms.  I've never done that.

I always wondered about that. It's only ever occasionally it happens. Is it related to your eyes feeling like they're each about the size of your skull (or bigger) and/or made of concrete? edit: just read about it on wikipedia... The bit about being unable to vocalize is interesting as that is a recurring theme in my dreams.

For me I didn't get that... but I think people get all sorts of weird stuff, especially when asleep or half asleep. I heard on the radio about this guy who woke up one morning and there were someone else's legs in his bed! So he tried to push them off the bed and fell out, turns out they were his :)

Of course smoking pot helps people create art! Well, it's helps me play the guitar and really get into the groove...man.

amazing video! i saw an animated 3d fractal zoom for the first time. it was like drugs having sex!  haaaa  i have a mac and have been looking for something that also reacts to audio like a visualizer. the obvious next step, if it hasn't been taken already, is mapping video and audio. music combined with fractal imagery is a sensory smorgasbord. anyway blah blah blah

Very interesting to see that this still is a single planet.  I am checking in from a little fishing village on the West coast of North America called Seattle.   What a tremendious site and great content.  I am still looking around and getting oriented.  I just finished the Autobiography by Benoit M.  Very good and you get the feeling that he was a very independent kind of person, and very confident in his own visions.  I loved the interview after the recent (2008) economic collapse:  he and Nasim Nicholas Taleb (Black Swan) both noted that 'too big to fail' really ment ' will fail with out a doubt due to complexity and non-linear feedbacks'.  More trouble on the way...  Thanks for the effort doing this site!    Bob

  That has me wondering if there are Asian specific fractal forum type websites- there are enough Asians that there could be a thriving community that we haven't connected with.

   If there is an active Asian community, it's up to the multilingual among us to reach out to them.

it is a long ongoing project for me to create sub-communities that are closely connected to eachothers in native languages, by now this has not been succseeded, i know that english is by far not understood by as many people as i always hope ( since i am actually again in mexiko where english is not so commonly known ... ) a spanish sub forum would be great, as well a chinese sub forum would be great ... :( webspace is now enough available and i could easily host such forums, anyone interested please contact me

Using hierogliphs they can understand each other even without knowing respective language. So it need just one section.

I'm 67 years old and have been an absolute fan of Fractals since I first read about them in a Sunday Newspaper feature in the 1960's (I believe).  Back then if you weren't involved in higher forms of math you had absolutely no exposure to Mandelbrot's world.
The first Fractal I created on my own computer took almost 18 hrs to render. I would set them up in the evening; go to bed; then work; then maybe get to see my creation. That
is if the program or computer didn't crash during the night. It was a challenge to be sure! But the results were worth it.

I live just outside of Philadelphia in Montgomery County.  I work at home doing grant research and consultations.  Right now we're gearing up for a wintry mix of snow and rain and its predicted that we'll get 4 inches of snow.

I have been playing around with fractals for a while now and I still finding it confusing at times  ::)

You say you paint fractals, and you may be seeking help.  We do have a couple members who paint fractals by hand, so maybe they will pop by and you can talk with them.

Unless you wanted help with something else...  The "request" was so vague as to leave me wondering just exactly what you want help with doing!

Yes I paint fractal animals by hand and yes I would like to post some in the next series "Challenges".  When does it start? I know that in the art world through the art guild, they have certain rules and regulations. I don't know if they are up to date on fractal paintings by hand would be?  So in order for my fractal animal paintings to go that distance, I would like to know where on earth would I even begin to show my art and sell it?  Not too many are familiar with fractal art, so I don't know where to start to even sell?
The animals are based on Chinese Feng Shui elements and Chinese astrological signs.  Through color and elements fractal animals are born.  I draw them and paint them by hand.
I will post some of my painting and maybe you could give me a direction as to where to start in selling.

Some general (art) advice.

Publish early and do not be afraid. If you see a chance, dive into it.

But if you wish to make money on it, hold back on full-resolution and (too much) openess.

I´m from Brasil and make own Basic fractals since ´85, following Fractint´s formulae since it´s issue number 13. With new Windows ´32 and now '64 bits it became difficult for me to see directly all Fractint and also Winfract capabilities. Because of that Windows renewals, I had to migrate to QB64 in order to continue programmning and now use a new 'fractal window' as is ManpWIN that behave nicely under those new platforms.
Nowadays (and for almost a full year), I´m a contribuitor with Paul´s Manpwin mainly in implementing a Chaos segment through Attractors and Oscillators, with almost 300 of them from since the 2D maps to 9D oscillators. I grabbed their formulae (and had to guess/try missing information) from ancient and recent papers from many, many authors. Sprott´s papers are an exception and by which direct, fully, complete papers made and easy task to 'translate' them into ManpWIN.
Paul´s ManpWIN made my skiny, poor, blurry Basic images a magnificent display in 3D, and also rotating the oscillators. By making it possible to see the images being constructed, we also have a 'time' axis and so a '4D' oscillator being made. The possibility to display the coordinates by dots or by lines connecting the dots make some difference, but the possibility to change constants, initial values, axis combinations, the almost 300 migrate to thousands of new, beautiful, crazy oscillators.
