Title: Mandelbulber 0.92 - progressive rendering
Post by: Buddhi on September 08, 2010, 09:11:22 PM
Mandelbulber 0.92 - for Linux x86, Linux x64 and also for Win32

Open source program (GNU GPL) for rendering photo-realistic 3D fractals

Free download: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mandelbulber/

New features in version 0.92:

- progressive rendering of image (first in very low resolution and then in higher and higher)
- all camera changes (zoom by click, 3D navigator) immediately stop rendering and start with new settings
- better environment mapping effect
- added "Fit to window" zoom option. In this mode the image is scaled with window.
- added front distance for fog effect
- source code: created cImage class - most of code was changed to use this class

Before first run please use install script

Thank you thank you thank you, Krzysztof - I've just started working with the last update (in stereo) and this progressive rendering will be a big help.

Not to rush you or anything, but I'm definitely also looking forward to the rewrite of the keyframe editor, to give more control over interpolation. I still feel like I'm flying drunk, smashing into fractal walls...   Still, I'm loving it!

Progressive rendering makes navigation so much faster! Awesome! :worm:

Are there any keyboard shortcuts for the 3D Navigator camera motions?

Also, I'm interested in building this myself and possibly contributing if I have time. I know Windows much better than Unix. Did you say you use Mingw for the windows build?

Maybe I am doing something wrong, but there seems to be a bug with the key-frame button. When I zoom to a location I like then I hit the Record Key-frame button in the Keyframe Animation section under the Animation tab, the formula resets to the default formula (I was using Tglad's and it resets to Kaleidoscopic)

Is there a tutorial on how to use the program with the most recent additions?

Thanks, and this produces some amazing pictures and movies, keep up the great work!

Hi

I have checked the program. It is normal behavior. With program there is delivered example keyframe set. It is located in .mandelbulber/keyframes directory (.mandelbulber folder is in Documents and Settings\UserName forlder or on Linux in home dir). If you look inside this folder, you will find 4 files keyframe00000.fract, keyframe00001.fract, etc.. When you press Record keyframe button, the program saves actual parameters to actual keyframe and loads (if exists) next keyframe. It is useful when you have to correct some keyframe. What you have to do:
- delete all existing keyframes (using some file manager)
- or set another directory for keyframes. Please click on button "Select file paths (output images, textures)" and click on "Select" button on the right side of "Keyframe sequence" editing field. Next please indicate some empty folder where you want to have saved keyframes. And finally press "OK" button for apply changes. Now keyframes should be recorded to this folder.
If you have some additional questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks! I will try that when I get home.
