Title: semi accurate depth map in MB3D
Post by: KRAFTWERK on August 17, 2010, 02:43:58 PM
On a request from bib I share Tattys workaround to get "semi" DOF in mandelbulb 3D

I hope this is OK for you Tatty...  O0

To get a sort of semi accurate depth map in MB3D, in the lighting tab you need to ..

1. turn all the lights OFF
2. Turn Di and Sp sliders to 0. Set the 3 Di swatches (from left to right) Black, Middle Grey and White
3. Set the Amb colour to white in both swatches.
4. Make sure the depth slider is 0 and both swatches are set to black.
5. Untick C.Cycling C.Orbit Trap and Far Fog
6. Set the 'Col var. on Z' slider to about the centre.
7. Set the Amb Shadow slider to 0

Now the bit where you need to tweak ...

Initially the fractal maybe completely black so ...

Slowley adjust the Col. Start slider until the fractal turns Grey / White.

You than need to finely adjust the 'Int col start', 'Int col mid' and Col Var on Z until you get a resonable map ...that covers a good spread of grey values with the brightest white being the closet to the camera. Adjusting the Amb slider can also help if the image clips on the whites.

Make sure you save the resultant image as the same size as the normal fractal colour image.

The rest is done in photoshop .. I think there are a few tutorials on the net about the technique.

Example image I did with this workaround:

And one of Tattys beautiful images:

Mhm... no Photoshop? Must be freeware out there that can do the same thing with layer masks?
