Title: trip to e228 (+remixes)
Post by: teamfresh on June 01, 2010, 01:49:57 AM
here it is...

Last Lights On
(runtime:13minutes44seconds)

http://vimeo.com/12185093

What can I say? well first of all for the love of god hit the fullscreen button!
(if you are on a low speed line you can click on the hd icon to switch it off/on)

what else can i say...
how about the bare facts. I will let you make up your mind about the animation itself and hope you leave a comment.

so here are the facts…

Two days to set up, and then six months to render 760 keyframes, resulted in around forty 1.9GB uncompressed .AVI files. I added watermarking, fx and time remapping, before multi-pass encoding the 80GB video in h264 (32,768 kbit/sec) and the audio in AAC.

The result is a very high quality
13m44s 1.77 GB (1,903,726,592 bytes) .MP4

****UPDATE****
Here are some altered versions of the original animation as requested.

People wanted it in Reverse...

I love the music, and
I know it wont be to everyone's taste-
but I hope you do to.
As a youtube partner I need to be stricter than most

to the content I upload on line.

If you have any music requests for my upcoming deep zoom that I would be able to use - by all means send me a mail teamfresh@hd-fractals.com

Wow.

Long!

13 Minutes would just never buffer on my crappy web computer, so I resorted to Firefox's "Download Helper" plugin, and watched it offline   O0

Nifty, Impressive, and Wonderful Work!

I liked the use of special effects at the end, even though I've been known to go overboard with that myself  :whistle2:

I hope computers get fast enough, soon enough, that nobody ever has to wait 6 months to render out stuff like that Ever Again!!

Thanks guys - Your comments really do mean a lot :angel1: . To be honest I think I could probably could have done the render quicker but I decided to rest the rendering machine on occasion, to stop it from melting! I think my computer hates me after that mammoth render ;D
although about the same depth, I feel this zoom pretty much smashes "trip to e214" to bits in terms of pretty much, well - everything - from the animation itself, to the quality of the final video file. I just cant wait to do the next fractal now.... :angel1:

I'd enjoy seeing that sort of Patience applied to a Mandelbulb render!

Or a Box, or any 3D Fractal at all really!!

Kiss and make up with the computer first.  Let it play a game or something, just to show it you care.

Then TORTURE it some More!! :hurt:

Haha, it thinks it hurts now but the pain has just begun :fiery:

I have a zoom to e1500 lined up!!!!     JOKE
I will def be working on 3d fractals for a while now... ;D ahhh Im so glad I have my computer back, must try to do things in a more realistic amount of time!!!

Best fractal zoom I've seen in my life. Never boring. And oh my god, it's full of spirals!

An interesting factoid: After watching through 13 minutes of rapid zooming, the text of the forum posting
seemed to start moving (optical illusion).

I need my daily fix of tunnel vision - so I watched this once more. The letters now seem slowly wobbling forward and backward as I type this.

Would there be a possibility to export the relative iteration count as depth information, and to render two slightly offset views of the scene - thus resulting in a parallax effect? I think this would greatly enhance the tunnel effect and it would also give the fractal shapes some kind of 3D structure.

The video could be exported in side by side wmv format and watched in stereoscopic player (a free player), which nVidia have licensed as "3Dvision video player". I own a pair of these nVidia shutter glasses :nerd: and a 120 Hz monitor, so I would be a willing test subject. ;)

Find a few sample videos here to understand the format better: http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-3d-movies.html

I think it would still look flat - you could prob get some bend in the image but not any decent kind of 3D.....
unless anyone else knows how to achieve this technique, I cant see how it would be done. :tease:
but I would love to see the equivalent of this animation in 3D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent video! Loved every minute of it... especially those points where the music and zooming seem to collide/cooperate to build up the suspense to another of those beautiful structures

Question: Did you try and export a high detail image in 2x2 and 4x4 anti-aliasing to see if there's a notable difference before going the 4x4 route and having to wait 6 months(!) for it to finish? I can see the point (maybe) for a very high resolution still image, but this is really taking it to extremes...

Very deep for sure, quite a project! I love the complicated structures you've found here. Nicely done. I would suggest possibly restructuring the colors a bit, maybe less of the bubble-gum pink.

The weird effect with vision after watching this and most other deep-zoom animations that just zoom in without pausing or zooming back out or moving around (like most of my own) is called "motion after effect" and it's essentially the same phenomenon that causes afterimage when you stare at something for a minute or so. Neurons accomodate to the persistent input, then when that stimulus is removed, the world looks like its opposite effect.

Here's a very weird and pronounced example of it: http://www.michaelbach.de/ot/mot_adaptSpiral/ (http://www.michaelbach.de/ot/mot_adaptSpiral/)

I didnt render the two images but I did want to push it to the max, no doubt it would have rendered a lot faster at x2 but now that its done I'm glad I chose x4. I think it looks better that way especially towards the end when you need to squeeze every bit of last detail out ;) having to double the amount of iterations right at the end just to gain a marginal amount of crispness for the final minibrot was a killer also - prob should have doubled it again really! :nerd:

Yes I am thinking of doing some sort of remix... but I do love pink for some reason.......

This is awesome!  I was just watching this video on youtube today and am suprised to find that the author is here on these forums.

If you don't mind, I have a couple of questions...

First, how did you choose the point to zoom into?  Is it kind of a guess and check process?

I'm assuming you had to use some form of arbitrary floating point data type.  I'm wondering, did you write your own, or can you recommend a good arbitrary floating point library?

Also, without going into too much detail, can you briefly explain how you handled max iterations as the depth of zoom increased?

Impressively deep! That really must have been a lot of iterations. Is that using arbitrary precision math?
I'd be curious to see what it would look like played backwards (i.e. zooming out). I.e. if there'd be a neater element of "surprise" as things appear from offscreen.

i will be releasing a reverse version in the future as I did for e214....

I found the spot and saved it (along with many others) whilst I explored around the fractal - and every now and then I make an animation that travels to one of these spots - for the kind of mathematical precision needed to create the depth of 760 magnifications the software used a fixed point as floating points normally are only good for around 40 magnifications. every frame was calculated with 20,000,000 iterations.

I have to say that that is one of the most incredible (and maddening) Mandelbrot zooms I've ever seen. The little tiny Mandelbrot at the end was a great kicker. While I was watching it, a bunch of quotes kept coming to mind:

"It's elephants all the way down."
"It just goes on and on and on forever."
"Big fleas have little fleas upon their back to bite 'em. Those little fleas have smaller fleas, so on ad infinitum."

Truly amazing work! :)

I like the effort you've put into this and think it's an interesting movie. II thionk you've done a magnificient job! I like the special effect in the end.
There are also a few things you could work on, I think you could do more with the colours, maybe look at color schemes of other artists.
It's a thing I often miss in fractal art though.

And well I don't like the music either.

Succes with further projects!

no, actually this is great idea, it is fairly easy to do with log map, if one knows palette. unfortunately, my log map of this video will probably be useless because of compression - it alters colors, so even if you know palette, you no longer can reliably match colors in the image :( maybe for next zoom? lol :) although I can still try it if you send me palette.

here's what you need to do. 1st for god sake, render log map. it minimizes repeated calculations and saves time. for example, if you want your 1920x1080 super duper HD video, log map with width = PI sqrt (1920˛ + 1080˛) = 7710 pixels. if anything, it will make good poster when it's finished :) height of your zoom was somewhere in 80k-es, so in our example it would equal to 80k / 1024 * 7710 = 617k, but you could actually reduce this as much as you want at the expence of added radial blur.

any way, the point is, that even with max 617k pixels you have enough colors in rgb space to color it with unique colors. all you do then in 3D is stack N rectangles (one per frame) and for every rectangle cut the hole in it where colors are those that appear later in zoom. voila, you have 3D tonnel to fly through.
