Title: Mandelbulb 3d newb - help with settings
Post by: lorilin on August 16, 2017, 06:14:23 PM
EDIT: My paramaters added per request (I started with the ones here (http://mandelbulb.com/2014/mb3d-parameter-set-by-hal-tenny/param03-striped-and-solids-haltenny/#main), but I think I changed a few things). I've also attached the animation file.

Hi folks,

I am very new to Mandelbulb 3D, so I'm not even sure about what terminology to use; my apologies in advance!

I'm using one of the Hal Tenny parameters to just learn basic camera moves before I get all crazy making my own fractals (I can imagine it's totally addictive).

I rendered som little test sequences and there were weird "holes" appearing in the objects. I put an example here

https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZxNwxzh2bdk

The "hole" appears in the little "bug" at the bottom center of the frame -- you can see it opening and closing.

Any idea what settings I should tweak to try to fix this? I tried playing with the DE stop, Raystep multiplier, and Stepwidth limiter. But it didn't really help much.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Cheers,
Lori

hi there, you should paste your params here if you want anyone to check them out

Thanks, Spain2points...I've edited the post and added my parameters and the animation file. I thought I was probably making such a basic newb mistake that the answer would be obvious to those with more experience  :embarrass:

Cheers,
Lori

Have you tried setting DE Stop to a lower value, 1 for example?

I'm not an expert in animations in MB3d (only made a few and rather simple) but I'm tempted to think that this problem has to do with folding int pow and its high iteration value.

Hi Lori:)

I have had a look at your parameters and see that your settings for the quality of the render are rather low. That will give all kinds of strange effects. Also, Folding Int Pow often gives ugly effects when Normals on DE (Calculation-tab) is enabled. Spain2points has already mentioned it: 50 iterations for this formula is a lot. It will only slow down your render, 10 is almost always enough. The Z multiplier (which gives smoothness to the formula) is better set to something like -30.

Have a look here:

Thanks for the tips, Sabine and Spain2points! All the settings are kind of overwhelming, so it's good to have some guidelines to start with. In general, the aliasing and artifacts seem to be the biggest problem I'm running  running into, and because of the long render times it makes experimenting pretty time-consuming. Thanks again!

Cheers,
Lori

Very welcome, Lori:)

In the beginning mb3d can be quite challenging. But it gets better, promise;)

The artefacts are either part of the fractal (they should be possible to be removed with some more tweaking) or are due to too low quality settings.
I have a tip for you regarding the antialiassing: mb3d has it built-in. Render 2 or 3 times as big as you want your output to be, then save the image with Viewing set to 1:2 (2x aa) or 1:3 (3x aa)

See below.

If you haven't discovered the Navigator window - it is very giving you a estimate of the final render.

The right side panel of the Navigator gives you almost real time control over the formula values and some important parameters.

You do not really need large iteration values ... lower them until you see an unwanted change then up it again by one..

Some of the fuzzyness will go  away if you render a bigger picture (image scale) then simply make the viewing window smaller.
e.g. scaling an image to 2000 x 2000 then using the view spinner to change it from1:1 > 1:2 gives a smother picture.

I have done a 5 min clean up of your original post formula.
