Title: Hi From Tasmania - Experimenting with OpenCL
Post by: Tas_mania on August 14, 2017, 02:47:23 PM
Hi forum members,
I'm new here with 10 years Gimp experience thats now mostly animation. I use Ubuntu and have installed and tried Mandelbulber2. I understand render time
is a big problem in the fractal world - especially animation. 30 hours render time  :snore:

I just compiled a project called 'Mandelbulb-4D' from github https://github.com/mandelbulb-4d/mandelbulb-4d (https://github.com/mandelbulb-4d/mandelbulb-4d). It's nowhere near finished and does not produce fractals yet. It implements OpenCL to use the GPU and CPU together for rendering.
Mandelbulb4D is easy to build once you have the OpenCL system working together and that is the hard part. It was my first time to implement OpenCL.

I think I will build some other github Mandelbulbe projects. 6 pages of then here:  https://github.com/search?p=1&q=Mandelbulb&type=Repositories&utf8=%E2%9C%93 (https://github.com/search?p=1&q=Mandelbulb&type=Repositories&utf8=%E2%9C%93)

Give Fragmentarium (https://github.com/3Dickulus/FragM) a try ;) It uses GLSL for GPU rendering :)

Hi and welcome in the forum!
Always good to see enthusiasts work on new approaches!

is mandelbulb-4d a seperate project or a fork?

Hi Valera,

I am zebastian from Mandelbulber.
Performance vs Features is still an issue, but we are just working on this to speed up the opencl implementation of the DE-formulas.
Contributions are always welcome ;) but  i can understand you want to start your own project.

You can also use parts of mandelbulber (its GPL licensed) in your own code, so let me know if you have any questions about that program.
But watch out for the license if you do: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/3902754/mit-vs-gpl-license

Welcome to the forum!  O0

Thanks for the welcome to the forum.
3dickulus - I just built Fragmentarium and I've found FragM. That looks really interesting.

Looks like a separate project. He intends to use and develop the Mandelbulb3D code.

Mandelbulber is very impressive. The preview renders are slow which forces me to use it as a background task. I have it installed on a 4 core Xeon with 8Gb ram. Its actually an old server with a graphics card. I develop on a different box but mostly i run Xubuntu.

For final rendering I found reducing frames is the easiest way. If you reduce every second frame in a large series then you should double the frame rate. There are algorithms to compress frame backgrounds but I don't use them. I export as AVI and then convert to webm but you need a webm host or webm support enabled. These files are very small.
My online gallery is here but no fractals yet...
