Thanks for posting that! Now I'm going through Hal Tenny's tutorial again to try learn slicing so I can slice the Menger in Mandelbulb 3D.

Add a rotate pretransform right before menger to get an inclined cut plane :)

IMHO thats a pretty usual result: 120deg mirrored "starry" structure.
Can you try with equirectangular projection exactly orthogonal and centered from the cutting plane?
