Title: kfb files for 'store zoom-out images'
Post by: tonymasiello on April 11, 2017, 01:30:38 AM
Hi,

Newb question here... I just D/L Kalles Fraktaler and have been playing around with it. I followed the sticky post for making videos and decided to try to make a 4k video. Besides saving the jpg files, there is also a kfb file created for each image. What are these files? At 4k resolution they were quite large and I was afraid it would run my drive out of space, so I ended up aborting. Are these kfb files needed for making video? If not, is there a way to suppress their creation?

Thank you!
-Tony

KFB files store raw uncompressed (ie huge but high quality) iteration data (the results of the fractal calculations before colouring is applied).

Having the raw data in KFB means you can do things like colour cycling in the movie maker, or otherwise tweak the colouring palette after rendering to make it look good throughout the zoom video.

I don't know if there are any movie makers that work with just the jpg files (I'm under the impression that the jpg are just for previews, but I must admit I've never made a movie with Kalles Fraktaler).

I suggest trying a short test video at low resolution, and seeing if you can make a movie without the KFB files - if successful, you could delete them while rendering continues, or request a new feature of KF not to save them in the first place...

Thanks for the quick reply Claude. I did try exactly that. I did a small low-res zoom out, deleted all of he KFB files, and then ran KeyFramesMovie64 and it seemed to have no problem creating the video from just the JPG files. Though being my first try, I'm not sure exactly what to expect.

4k videos do take up an awful lot of space.
the largest kf zoom project I did needed 740gb of free space (kfbs+first avi render)

Wow... That is huge. I may need to save to my NAS as the SSD drives on my laptop are too small for this purpose...

Thanks for the replies!
