Title: Mandelbulber Stock Render Benchmark Image
Post by: paigan0 on March 12, 2017, 03:40:33 PM
Blender and other apps like Cinebench have a standard, default image that gets rendered for purposes of assigning a score to the CPU and the computer system it lives in. Mandelbulber should have a stock fractal image that everyone can test their systems against. I'd suggest both a CPU and a GPU image, and of course, when Mandelbulber re-adds GPU functionality down the road, one fractal setting would suffice for either a CPU or a GPU render.

My render farm is a mix of different chips with different cores at different speeds, and it'd be useful to have a test image to render that would give whatever combination of Clients that I'm running a time for me to check against the benchmark.

I'd suggest adding that test default benchmark image to the next release of Mandelbulber, or using one of the existing sample setting fractals and calling it the default benchmark test render image. Or having a separately downloaded test render file at Mandelbulber (or all of the above).

For example: this current rig rendered "Stock Mandelbulber Benchmark Image" [real names/nicknames to follow later!] in only 47 seconds!

Blender has several stock test benchmark animations and images. The BMW render sceneis the standard default benchmark render for Blender.
Check out some of these: https://www.blender.org/download/demo-files/

What do we think? And any existing or new candidates for such a benchmark .fract file for rendering times? I'd argue against the stock Mandelbulb that is the default, just because it is too simple and won't tax a system.

Benchmark is already implemented. Run mandelbulber using following command:
Code:
mandelbulber2 --benchmark

In Windows? Sorry, can you explain that just a bit, please? Some kind of run prompt on Mandelbulber? I've never actually done that with MDBR before!  :hmh:

We will implement graphical version of benchmark for users which are not familiar with command line.

Thanks, Buddhi/Kryz! Sorry to be the dumb guy who never uses the command line. But I appreciate it! I'm sure I'm not the only one that might want to use Mandelbulber and not command lines! Thank you, sir!
